Benjamin Franklin and Sandra Cisneros Success Benjamin Franklin and Sandra Cisneros are two great examples of overcoming the trials and tribulations of life to find personal success. They express their stories of success in each of their autobiographies. Franklin's autobiography was written in a letter form for his son, William. Cisneros grew up in Chicago with her family as the only daughter with six boys. As a child, she took many trips to Mexico to visit her relatives. Her Latina heritage was very prevalent throughout her whole life. She did not excel in school or her social life throughout her early years. She found a magical get-away in reading. Maybe her wild imagination is what drove her to break the rules of her heritage by leaving home before marriage. She went on to attend a prestigious university. The rest of the children at the university were well educated and somewhat privileged. She felt out of place, but continued to focus on her studies. The occurrences at the university are what caused her to begin writing The House on Mango Street. She not only wrote books, but she enjoyed writing poetry. Cisneros obtained her MFA degree, and she began to work with many famous writers. Franklin began the New England Courant in 1721, and it was published without British approval. Franklin became a very influential leader in the colonial movement for independence, so he was sent to France to get help for the Revolution. He attended the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. Franklin became the only man to sign all four important documents: Declaration of Independence, the treaty of alliance with France, the peace treaty with England, and the Constitution. Franklin set many goals for himself to reach his goal of moral perfection. He made a list of thirteen virtues to try and live by. Cisneros had many educational travels worldwide including living in Europe, but she decided to move back to Texas where she felt closer to Mexico. She expressed, "But most important Texas brought Mexico back to me." Cisneros received many prestigious awards for her writing. Her books are enjoyed by all no matter what age, gender, or ethnicity. I believe part of her goal was to reach all audiences, especially those with different backgrounds. Her books help those who have different heritages and feel like they don’t fit in to feel like they're not alone, and with this I think she achieved her own personal success. This is part of the reason why her books are praised by many critics. Franklin became known as the "Father of the Country" before George Washington. He changed and shaped the lives of Americans for eternity. This is probably why his face is on the one-hundred-dollar bill. He wrote his autobiography to pass on his wisdom to his son, and inevitably future generations. He said, "I hope, therefore, that some of my descendants may follow the example and reap the benefit."
