Similarities Between Elie Wiesel And George Orwell

Elie Wiesel is a Holocaust survivor, who accepted a Noble Peace Prize in 1986. In Elie’s acceptance speech, Elie teaches us why keeping memory alive is important and how it affects oppressed people. George Orwell is the author of ‘Animal Farm’ who brings us into the horrible reality of leaders taking advantage of their power, harming their citizens. Wiesel and Orwell both alert people to how forgetting important events affects society using literary devices in their writing. Wiesel and Orwell use personification and symbolism to warn people about what forgetting an impactful historical event does to victims. Additionally, we see how the pigs manipulate the rest, in chapter five we see how Squealer manipulates everyone, not being on Napoleon’s side and portraying Snowball as the enemy. Pigs are a great example of what happens when someone forgets where they came from and takes advantage of their power. Furthermore, Elie Wiesel used symbolism in his Noble Peace Prize acceptance speech. This speech was a heart touching speech that opened man eyes, not staying quiet and speaking up for the oppressed. In paragraph 4 of Wiesel’s speech, he describes his younger self as bewildered and full of suffering. He clearly remembers how he discovered the ‘kingdom of night’. The ‘kingdom of night’ is a symbol that represents suffering and darkness when someone lives through that they find themselves suffering and without hope, faith is slowly fading away, slipping out of their hand.
