In 1764, the tables were turned after the unveilment of a new form of literature, known today as, ‘Gothicism.’ This style of literature was also typically known as, ‘Gothic Horror,’ because it mixed arts of fiction, horror, death, and occasionally romance. Two of today’s most notable, classic horror stories; Dracula and Frankenstein proved to be the most famous novels during the Gothic movement. Frankenstein was written and published by Mary Shelley in 1818, and is still a recognizable story today. Dracula composed and published by Ireland native, Bram Stoker in 1897. After grasping the knowledge of the plots of both stories, it became obvious that there were several similarities in the themes of both novels. Before thematic similarities between the two stories can be analyzed, it is important for each story to be summarized so that each story will be thoroughly understood. The story of Frankenstein began with a brief introduction of the main character, Victor, who was born in Geneva, Switzerland, and went on to major in philosophy and chemistry in college. Victor was fascinated with finding, ‘The secret of life,’ and after years of research and trials, was finally convinced that he had found it. Victor then began to get to work on designing his creature which didn’t fail to scare Victor himself. After leaving and returning to his home, the monster had disappeared and was soon spotted again in the same woods in which his brother, William, was recently murdered. While on vacation by himself, Victor was approached by the monster whom willingly admitted to the murder of Victor’s brother. Victor was then begged by the monster to create a companion for him. Harker was soon encountered with strange and creepy locals that whispered gibberish which was later found out to mean, ‘Vampire.’ Harker then met Dracula at his castle, only to find out shortly after that he was actually imprisoned. During his imprisonment, Harker is attacked several times and decided that he’d had enough and decided to escape. After Harker escaped, he learned that his fianceé’s friend, Lucy, had come under the spell of a vampire. Through the application of several temporary remedies, Lucy’s condition got better and worse. One night, a wolf broke into Lucy’s house which instantly caused Lucy’s mother to have a heart attack and die, while the wolf killed Lucy itself. It is soon realized that Lucy is an, ‘undead,’ and it was necessary to end her reign as a vampire immediately. After slaying Lucy, a pledge is made to kill Dracula himself. While researching Dracula, how he could be found and slayed, Mina, Harker’s new wife, was killed by Dracula. While Mina transformed into a vampire, Dracula’s earth boxes were sterilized by the men which forced Dracula to leave his home, Transylvania. The group then split up and chased Dracula while the rest of the group cleansed the castle. The story ended with the men destroying Dracula with knives before he could reach his
