Washington tried to warn us. During his Farewell Address, Washington tried to alert the nation against political parties as he saw it becoming a growing threat. When political parties formed, there were many differences causing our country to split, rather then unite, affecting the nation as a whole. Although they bear some minor similarities, the differences between Federalists and Democratic - Republicans are striking. Alexander Hamilton formed the Federalist Party in1791. Hamilton created this political party after he and Thomas Jefferson had several disagreements. When Hamilton was elected as Secretary of Treasury, he started gathering supporters, which formed the Federalist Party. Hamilton generated the first political party by producing …show more content…

These two totally different political parties were able to agree on one very important topic, their goal and a free republic for our nation. However, if the topic “government” gets brought up, they have two totally different ideas. The Federalists thought we should have a strong Federal Government with a national bank. On the contrary, Democratic Republicans wanted a weak federal government with state banks. Even though we used to be ruled by the British, Federalists were Pro - British, whereas Democratic - Republicans were Pro - French. Educated, wealthy people were to support the Federalists and their top priority was to help the wealthy, unlike the Democratic Republicans. They were a group of ordinary people that wanted to help the debtors first. Hamilton, followed by the Federalists, viewed people as selfish. On the other hand, following Jefferson, the Democratic - Republicans believed people to be mainly good. The Constitution was not strongly interpreted by the Federalists, they believed it gave implied powers. However, the Democratic - Republicans thought the Constitution needed strict reading and should be followed. Two different theories on ways to make money were formed. Federalists believed manufacturing would make the money the nation needed, whereas Democratic - Republicans thought agriculture would bring in enough money. The nation was split between the two parties, many people from the Northern states were Federalists, while Southern states mainly followed the Democratic - Republican Party. Setting aside the many differences these two parties had, there was a seldom amount of similarities.
