Revenge is Air to Humans
In Hamlet and Frankenstien both writers use cause and effect to foreshadow how revenge is going to be executed. The universal truth about revenge's role in the human condition that both Shelly and Shakespeare would agree on is that revenge is no doubt human nature and it is something that no human can refuse.
Towards the beginning of Hamlet the main character Hamlet sees a ghost and is told to avenge is fathers wrongful death. “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.” (Shakespeare pg. 23) The foreshadowing in the beginning of the book provides Hamlet’s future intent to get revenge on Claudius. The beginning of the book addresses a very important topic (human life), “One man’s life or death were but a small price to pay for the acquirement of the knowledge” (Shelly 11) Even Though neither Victor Frankentien or the creature say this quote it foreshadows the little/big importance of human life in the book. The price of human life in Frankenstein is nothing compared to the reward accomplished with revenge. This quote is in the very beginning of the book and it touches on what will come later. Human life is and isn’t valued by Victor and the creature. The creature kills many humans that are close to Victor however Victor creates the creature and abandons him. They both value human life when it affects them personally. This is very mirrored in both characters by the way they react after the other achieves revenge. One of the most important turning points in Frankenstein is when the creature promises to see Victor on his wedding day, “I will see you on your wedding day”(Shelly 112) At this point in Frankenstein the monster and Victor are at war with each other. The monster tells Victor that he will see him on his wedding day because Victor didn’t make the monster a partner. The monster did indeed achieve revenge on Victor. Even though the monster isn’t human he is still feeling the immense urge to seek revenge. The creature is so hungry to get revenge that when he literally just sees Victor he wants to kill him. “The nearer I approached to your habitation, the more deeply did I feel the spirit of revenge enkindled in my heart.”(Shelly 16)The creature even though he is not technically human he still longs to live like a human and act like one. He believed that he could be a good person even before he wanted to get revenge. This however changed because of Victor’s actions against him. It's so rooted in us as humans to want revenge. By the creature feeling hatred that exemplifies just embedded the want for revenge is. Also the creature had many opportunities to get revenge on Victor and he took them. By killing people close to Victor the creature is feeling human emotions. The creature tells Victor, "I have love in me the likes of which you can scarcely imagine and rage the likes of which you would not believe. If I cannot satisfy the one, I will indulge the other."(Shelly 67) This specific confrontation between the creature and Victor really shows how much anger the creature has toward his creator. The creature at this point is directly telling Victor that if he doesn't kill Victor he will kill someone else. In the creature’s mind he believes the best way to get revenge is to murder. This is way more drastic than how most humans get revenge on others nonetheless
