Martin Luther King Jr. has written many inspirational pieces during his lifetime while fighting for African American civil rights. Two of his most inspirational writings are his I Have A Dream speech and the Letter From Birmingham Jail. The only question that remains is “which one takes the cake,” meaning, which one conveys the deepest, most meaningful message about the fight for equal rights? It is clear, however, that the Letter From Birmingham Jail shows itself to be the true winner because of its powerful message and great detail involving the issues of segregation and the unequal rights that African Americans faced everyday, which stirred and appealed to the emotions of his audience.

Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Patrick Henry have a way of informing their audience the way they are living currently living is unfair and their society should make a change. On the other hand, Martin Luther King is using non violence for equality and to stop segregation while Patrick Henry is telling his speech for liberty and freedom from Great Britain.

There have been many influential speeches throughout history. Some of the most well-known include Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address" and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. A speech given to the mutineers by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was not widely known but had a significant impact. Joshua Chamberlain told the 120 mutineers that he wanted to fight with the South in order to get more soldiers, be stronger, and win. Chamberlain's speech revealed his characteristics, prompting the mutineers to decide to fight with him.
King also discusses his personal life, along with his family and children, to show the crowd that he is fighting for the same things as them. In his I Have a Dream speech, Martin Luther King, Jr. used ethos to increase his credibility with his audience, pathos to appeal to his audience’s emotional side, and logos to appeal to his audience’s logical side. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s use of ethos begins in the first few lines of his I Have a Dream speech. He begins the speech with a direct reference to Abraham Lincoln and his Gettysburg Address. King speaks of Lincoln as an admired figure in the Civil Rights Movement when he states “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand, signed the Emancipation Proclamation” (King 84).

During World War One (WWI), inventions and technology began to increase dramatically, which assisted to high death rates in the war. However the real change was the warfare itself, with the new technology and the new military tactics, this advanced weaponry could be defended. The changes were one the causes for the increased death rate however, it was not solely due to the revolution of technology because many of these deaths was caused by illness. Therefore the high death rate of World War One cannot be solely attributed to the use of military technology.
On August 28th, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr gave us one of one of the most rhetorically moving speeches ever given. Titled as the “I Have a Dream Speech,” he read this speech to the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom”. As a civil right mover he gave this great speech to all Americans (black and white) so that he could give off the idea of equality on the same level. Because of his crowd of mix races King made sure to make his speech imploring to all no matter what the race that they may be. He uses metaphorical imagery, powerful diction,and symbolism to create an impact on the audience.
Martin Luther King’s speech, “I Have a Dream” is vastly recognized as one of the best speeches ever given. His passionate demand for racial justice and an integrated society became popular throughout the Black community. His words proved to give the nation a new vocabulary to express what was happening to them. Martin was famously a pacifist, so in his speech, he advocated peaceful protesting and passively fighting against racial segregation.
These two speeches are similar in many ways but are also different in many ways too. But not only by what its about and what they say. But how they say and how they structure it, by their tone, language, purpose and many more of these examples. The tone of both the Gettysburg Address and “I have a dream” speech is different.
