There have been many influential speeches throughout history. Some of the most well-known include Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address" and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. A speech given to the mutineers by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was not widely known but had a significant impact. Joshua Chamberlain told the 120 mutineers that he wanted to fight with the South in order to get more soldiers, be stronger, and win. Chamberlain's speech revealed his characteristics, prompting the mutineers to decide to fight with him. One difference between how they were handled prior to the camp and how they arrived is that they entered under guard. In the text it states “The Captain of the guard came forward and presented Chamberlain with his orders for the prisoners. Once the guards had left, Chamberlain addressed the prisoners” (Shaara 7).This demonstrates that the prisoners were led by guards who were prepared to shoot the mutineers if they were rebellious. These guards would harm them under any Captain's command. They didn't require guards when they reached Chamberlain's camp, so he let them sit down. Another difference between how Chamberlain treated the prisoners and how they were treated before they arrived was that the mutineers were not properly fed and were extremely hungry. In the text it states “When was that last time you ate? Heads came up. There was no answer. Then a man said in front huskily, We’re hungry, Colonel. Chamberlain nodded. They told us you were coming just a little while ago. I've told the cook to prepare you something” (Shaara 7).This data indicates that the guys fighting for their country are starving since they haven't eaten in a long time. Chamberlain gave them food they hadn't eaten in a long time, and if they had, it wasn't very good. The men always had to go a long distance to come to the camp without food. Chamberlain's speech displayed many of his character traits, prompting the mutineers to decide to fight with him.
