Joshua Chamberlain, a scholar, had a strong hanker to go into the military despite his family’s wishes for his attendance in college. He went to Maine and was assigned a top-notch role in the Maine 20th Regiment, but declined because he wanted to see the elephant from Col. Adelbert Ames. Chamberlain fought in many battles in Fredericksburg like the battle in Mary Height, but couldn’t fight in the battle of Chancellorsville because of a smallpox outbreak in the army. Despite of the fact that the soldiers were peaked which was the reason why the soldiers missed the battle, small pox did help Chamberlain because Alderbert made brigades out of his army and Chamberlain was a head of one of the brigades of the 20th Regiment. On July 20,
He was well equipped to seize a victory at Chancellorsville and it began with the intelligence he was able to
Geronimo is a hero that fully demonstrates leadership. This reflects creditably on Geronimo, whose leadership at the avoiding the enemy and also providing the subsistence for his people in a raid on the Troop (Robert M.Utley,2012). Furthermore, he lacks the social and political leadership skills of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce (Edward Rielly,Geronimo:The Warrior, 2011). Moreover, Geronimo used his leadership at useful things and Geronimo demonstrated his own powers with people and horses. He created an atmosphere of safety (Jacey,Cultivate Confidence,2010).
Because [his] war ended before [he] ever put on a uniform; [he] was on active duty all [his] time at school; [he] killed the enemy there.”
“I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by lions” Alexander the Great. Killer Angels the historical novel by Michael Shaara details many great lions of leadership. One of these great lions of leadership was Joshua L. Chamberlain, a colonel of the Union army. Chamberlain coming in to a leadership position after acting as a professor led to him becoming a great leader through his personality characteristics. These included how he was a decisive and intuitive leader, an understanding leader, and an intelligent leader.
Leader, a title most wish to earn, and when earned its hardships are realized in accordance. Periodically, such textbook examples are bound to appear, and so it did in 1776, when America’s proud chief George Washington became a leader and through the conquest of Cambridge and Boston, the loss at New York and flee from it likewise, and the final turning point by winning in Trenton and Princeton, showcases the above as true. Through telling of his story by David McCullough in 1776, with use of contrast and weary diction, the author claims further that leaders aren’t great, brave men, but instead foolhardy charters that seek for the betterment of their lives. Washington realized that shortages on tents, “blankets and clothing” were becoming
A good leader would follow the laws of war and refrain from clearly immoral situations. Chief Gallagher’s vices hinder the development of his team and his ability to effectively lead them in combat. War provides a place of comfort and growth for a virtuoso at the cost of their unit’s development. As the human embodiment of war, a virtuoso undergoes a transformation through their experience in combat. Coker claims “it allows him to lead an authentic life”.
Sylvanus Thayer Award Acceptance Address by General Douglas MacArthur “Duty, Honor, Country”(“American Rhetoric: General Douglas MacArthur -- Sylvanus Thayer Award Address”). Those three words are ones recited by General Douglas MacArthur time and time again in his acceptance address for the Sylvanus Thayer Award. General MacArthur was a decorated war hero, serving in the army for most of his life; however, he was relieved of duties by President Truman. The general has years of experience and is someone who one would be able to trust. After serving for so long and rising through the ranks, it’s no wonder he would be able to give such an emotional and trustworthy speech.
Though it is the dream of most, few men have risen from the lines of poverty to the utmost remembered general of Virginia history. Many Americans know this general as being a humble man, “The louder people cheered, the more embarrassed he became” (Robertson 9). This man was General Thomas Johnathan Jackson, whose nickname “Stonewall” remains the most famous in Virginia history. Nevertheless, what a majority of people do not know is Jackson’s struggled rise to power and the “Gentleman of Manners” (Roberson 11) who placed his main studies on becoming a better person through a book of maxims. Growing up with his an uncle consumed with greed, Jackson partook in few opportunities of education and learning the prosperities of love.
During the mid-nineteenth century, the controversy over the morality of slavery and the rights of African Americans overshadowed America’s efforts of building a united nation. In fact, this controversy tore America apart. Abraham Lincoln was not only one of the leading anti-slavery advocates, but he also eventually became president during this tumultuous era. Many events occurred prior to the start of the Civil War that shaped Lincoln’s thinking and his approach to abolishing slavery. These events include the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, the Dred Scott decision of 1857, and Lincoln’s senate race against Stephen A. Douglas.
Effective Leaders The question “Would you rather be feared or respected?” is often asked when discussing how to be an effective leader. The war novel The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien proves that leaders who are willing to compromise and listen to others when making a decision are more effective than leaders who are unwilling to compromise. Tim O’Brien was a soldier in the Vietnam War, who was in the same platoon as Jimmy Cross (Lieutenant), and other soldiers such as Kiowa and Curt Lemon. After the war ended, O’Brien went home to Minnesota and wrote different stories about his experiences in the war.
One of the most important decisions we make in life is who we choose to be around. Although many people are in big essential roles, this does not make them good leaders. Torvald and Jimmy Cross, who are considered to be looked upon to lead, do not posses the precise characteristics that are needed to lead a group of people. Robert, however, shows the right attitude, respectfulness, and the ability to make everyone around him into a better person. Robert, who posses all the correct attributes, proves that he is the most fit to be
The young Napoleon was a remarkable student. He excelled at the military schools in Paris. On more than one occasion, Napoleon and the other students would stage battles in the snow, and not so coincidentally Napoleon would lead both the attacking and the defending “armies” (Abbot 26-27). Even in his youth, Napoleon’s leadership skills were far superior to those around him.
There are many ways that people can lead, whether it be through manipulation, through dedication to their religion, or just following another person’s leadership style. Each style has the possibility of being effective, but only if the leader themselves uses this style correctly. In A Man for All Seasons there is only one person who shows the capability of being a successful leader, that person was King Henry VIII. One of the reasons for this is because Henry used many intelligent methods while ruling. Another reason is that he did whatever was necessary to attain what he wanted.
He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent" (McCarther 2015). A leader should lead from the front and also have the ability to think quickly on their feet and take care of their Soldiers. Have faith and trust that the leadership is doing their best to keep everything in
