The time period during the 18th century had many influential people that changed American history. However, the three people known to be George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Abigail Adams made remarkable changes that would be remembered even till today. George Washington's presidency created traditions and established precedents that would be carried out through our government today and the presidents, also Benjamin Franklin would be a dominant figure to the colonies as well as Abigail Adams who would strive for women's rights. During George Washington’s administration, he set our nation on a path that has withstanded for over two hundred years, and lasted longer than any other republic in history.
John Quincy Adams and Abigail Adams are both significant people in American History. Both big historical great human beings that play wonderful parts in our history. Both who onced lived in the White House, who voiced their opinions, and were well known. Despite the fact, both had the same historical beliefs, they also had many differences. Even though they share many similarities, they also have many differences.
In the book “The Crucible” By Arthur Miller, some characters would rather lie to save their reputation than tell the truth. If Abigail Williams one of the main characters would have acted out a lot of people would be saved. John Procter committed adultery. Parris is a reverend of the church. All these characters have reputations which they try to save.
John Proctor, Deputy Governor Danforth, and Abigail Williams were worried about their reputation in town, and they were willing to commit many sins and harm others to keep their reputation clean. To begin with,
Abigail Adams and Shakespeare were part of two different time periods, they both have different education levels, and have different things they are writing about. This translated to their pieces of literature very different in terms of context and writing style. Abigail, unlike Shakespeare, is writing to her son about her concerns. She emphasizes “that wisdom and penetration are fruits of experience, not the Lessons of retirement and leisure”. She believes that scholarship is significant and talks about it, whereas shakespeare doesn’t.
The more people she killed, the less it meant to her. The town started to realize the horror taking place--even some of the girls. But Abigail no longer had any consideration for her sins and continued to persecute more and more innocent people. Abigail Williams proved to be the most heinous character throughout the entirety of the play. Her actions were not justifiable in any way.
Abigail and the others did not want to be punished for their actions in the woods so they turned the blame onto others. They first accused
Propriety of the court may be brought under further investigation, fueled by John’s confession and the rumors of rebellion in Andover. Though it can not concretely be said that John’s confession would bring forth this course of action, his position in the town, and the town’s growing discontent with the court, is indicative of its strong possibility. If these events were to pass, the likelihood of the accused being let off due to the dissolution of the court, brought upon by the townspeople of Salem, would be significant. The reputations of the accused, living and dead, confessed and mute, would be restored. Nonetheless, these events never come to pass.
Because of this, logic behind his actions become lost since he begins executing them with a desire to reform the corruptness of his crime. Elizabeth suggests to Proctor, that by telling the court that Abigail and the other girls bewitchments are of pretense, all women who were sentenced to death would be given their lives back. He knows that telling the judges is the most rational, but he pauses before making a choice as he responds “quietly, struggling with his thought” (53). His uncertainty shows his conflicting emotion because Proctor feels he cannot accuse Abigail because his guilt will not allow him to. But he coexisting feels the priority to accuse her in order to keep Elizabeth in high spirits.
John Procter went to break things off with Abigail Williams because his wife found out about the affair and she accused Elizabeth of witchcraft hoping that Elizabeth would no longer stand in the way of their “love”. The only problem that interfered with her plan was that John didn’t feel that strongly for Abigail. He cared more deeply for his wife. Whenever John went to testify against Abigail, she accused him as well. Elizabeth Procter and John Procter were hung.
During the Witch Trials, Parris’ teachings also revolved more around Satan and a person’s sinful ways. Lastly, the final effect of the Salem Witch Trials was that it affected many individuals personally. Reverend Parris’ reputation became so horrible, they voted him out of the church. Then, John Procter was convicted of witchcraft and hung. Meanwhile, Abigail was driven out of town and thought to have become a prostitute in Boston.
Danforth the judge of the court said ": You misunderstand, sir; I cannot pardon these when twelve are already hanged for the same crime. It is not just”. Danforth explains that he understands that Abigail was listening now but he just cant the ones alive who were also accused walk free because of the fact that some many others have died because of the allegations so he has to kill them too. In result of abigail bluffing all the time the town went into hysteria, this is a perfect example of the consequences of not owning up and taking responsibility because what she did saved herself from punishment although in doing so it killed 20 people and endangered many others. If abigail had used her hysterical lie where she confessed to god and said that she was free of the devil’s curse and didn’t blame anyone none of those people who were hang would have died and the witch trials could have been avoided all together. The other representation of taking responsibility, as I once said, would be john proctor because at the very end he refuses to lie to save himself and he takes responsibility by lying about him being possessed, then refusing to sign the confession and ripping it up; in doing so he made sure nobody else got killed and ended the killings of witch accusations because the town knew the judges had no right to accuse him because of his reputation, and the type of person he
If John, Abigail, and Elizabeth would have been honest instead of lying and keeping secrets, many lives could have been saved. They lied for different reasons, Abigail for greed and her own twisted dreams, John and Elizabeth for keep John's name clean. The lying led to many deaths, and much confusion. I think Arthur Miller was trying to tell us through The Crucible that you should always be honest even if it hurts you or
