In the novel Whale Talk, Taoism plays an integral part of the plot from the very beginning. The protagonist of the novel, The Tao Jones, is named by his biological mother after the Taoist book Tao Te Ching. When he enters school, he is often bullied because of his strange name. To avoid being bullied and embarrassed by his classmates, he begins calling himself T.J., his initials. It is very clear that his name is an indicator of what his personality is going to be.
6.1. Given the passage’s place in the canon and genre, how will its message be communicated? Because Jonah fits in the category of History, it reflects on what were the important events in past. The history also teaches that God helps those who acknowledge and follow him but he punished those who turn their backs against him.
25,26 As Chip and Catherine start searching the name’s Jonah decides to not helps until they start finding leads. The next point of view the letters are understood as our chips in ships point of view he believes that the letters represent a threat or a mystery. My example is how he constantly repeats that they “need to look into the list and find out who was sending the letters also where the letters were being sent from.”
Knowledge In The Odyssey VS Farenheit 451 Knowledge is facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education: theoretical or understanding of a subject. In the epic poem, the Odyssey, Odysseus is the true definition of knowledgeable by the way he gets through the struggles of his life. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag uses his knowledge to oppose the world he lives in. This common theme, knowledge, is important in Fahrenheit 451 and the Odyssey; they have many differences and things in common when dealing with this.
The Odyssey by Homer is an exemplary story that teaches life lessons to those going on a journey for themselves. It illustrates how the challenges and obstacles one may face can help someone become a better leader. The Odyssey highlights one man, Odysseus, a man filled with excessive pride, experiencing the wrath of the god Poseidon. He expects to arrive at his home, Ithaca, safely to reunite with his wife, Penelope, but unfortunately faces many temptations and setbacks. Due to the challenges he faces, it prevents him from arriving home as early as he thought he would.

“A long time ago, my ancestor Paikea came to this place on the back of a whale. Since then, in every generation of my family, the first born son has carried his name and become the leader of our tribe... until now” (Caro & Sanders, 2003). Whale Rider is the story of a girl, Pai, whose twin brother and mother die in child birth. Koro, Pai’s grandfather and leader of the Maori tribe, is devastated that their future leader has died. Years later Koro is determined to find a leader and begins to teach and train the boys, in which Pai is not allowed to join because she is a girl.
Whale Rider is the story of a young girl, Paikea, who has found her destiny following in the footsteps of her ancestors to be the chief of the tribe; these chiefs have always been men, and Paikea is put to the test to see if she is able to fulfill this position. This long line of chiefs have all experienced ‘The Hero’s Journey,’ the adventure that consists of the stages one must go through to become a hero. In Niki Caro’s Whale Rider, Paikea transforms from a young girl to the chief of the tribe when she walks down the beach and decides to climb onto the back of the whale, because she is accepting her destiny as the chosen one of the family, and despite the fact that she is struggling through this experience, she is still stepping up to the plate and willing to do this for her family which is what makes her a recognizable hero. Paikea’s journey as a hero began because originally, she was born as a twin. Her twin was meant to become the next chief of the tribe, but he died at birth and took her mother with him.
The book of Jonah is a short narrative packed with big ideas and lessons inside of it. It tells the story of the prophet Jonah, who was called by God to speak prophecy to the people of Nineveh. Instead of answering the call, Jonah ran away. In the midst of his fear, Jonah boarded a ship leaving for Tarshish. The voyage is cut short by a storm in which Jonah told his fellow men to cast him into the sea so the storm will pass.
Noah’s Ark: Voyage for the Truth The Genesis Flood is an extraordinary event that occurred thousands of years ago. Approximately 4,800 years ago, God decided to flood the Earth in order to cleanse the world of sin. God gave Noah the task of building a gigantic vessel large enough to hold two of every species in the world.
This is a substantiation. Question: Did Jonah want to die because of the pain he was enduring from the elements? Or did he want to die because of his guilt?
Every novel or stories gives a fundamental ideas or lesson for the readers. Most of the lesson are informative and it brings a changes to the readers mind. There will be a universal of an ideas explored in a literature and readers can abstract numerous themes depending on each individual. Similarly, in the novel “the old man and the sea” Hemingway depicted several themes related to nature, people and so on. However determination can also be one of the theme for the readers because the old man, Santiago didn’t gave up fishing even if he had cramp but he took this as an encouragement in his old age.
This makes perfect sense if Jonah feels that his culture and his ways are the correct way to live and worship. His oversight is the power of God’s love and what He can perform. We are all only human, just as Jonah was, but it is faith that separates.
The whale is white and for Ishmael, whiteness can represent both good and evil, which appalls him because there is no clear answer to what white ultimately means. Ishmael states how many cultures around the world associates whiteness as a sign of nobility, royalty or leadership, but at the same time, whiteness holds this other dimension that links to the spiritual world. He points how the white holds a supernatural quality due to the absence of color and its rarity to find white in its purest form in nature, thus emphasizing the point that the whale is an element that is not seen and is unclear because it cannot be found anywhere on earth due to its hue. This supports how Moby Dick is not found in years because his color is a rarity in nature, it is difficult to find a species of that form in the ocean. It is because, “…that its indefiniteness it shadows forth the heartless voids and immensities of the universe, and thus stabs us from behind with the thought of annihilation, when beholding the white depths of the milky way?”
WHALE RIDER The film ‘whale rider; was directed by Niki Caro. The story is a representation of the importance of tradition and ancestry. Symbolism is used in this film to help to show the importance of the community they live in and the elders and ancestors that have helped to build and structure their religion and the people that live within the community. The symbols that will best represent the importance of the film are the whale tooth, the bike and the windows.
