Some of the awards that she has been nominated for and has even received include: Chubb Fellowship given by Yale University, Coretta Scott King Honor for African-American authors of books for young people, Tony Award Nomination for her role in Broadway play Look Away, Matrix Award given by New York Women in Communication, and many others. Besides creating many inspiring poems Angelou also wrote many books in her time. One of her most known books is a memoir about her childhood called I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

Both Mandelstam and Hughes use a central figure to stand in for a greater entity: the Soviet Union. Langston Hughes glorifies the Soviet Army, while Osip Mandelstam lambasts Stalin. To Langston Hughes, America’s disenfranchisement of him and millions of other black Americans, as well as the fascist threat, meant that the Soviet Union represented a new ideal of valor and justice. To Mandelstam, the Soviet Union was bleak, sadistic repression; a land that lacked all the basic freedoms America takes for granted. As a result of the many hardships that she suffered while growing up as a poor black woman in the south she has used her own experiences as the subject matter of her written work. In doing this she effectively shows how she was able to overcome her personal obstacles. Her autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970) tells the story of her life and how she overcame and moved forward triumphantly in spite of her circumstances.

But race had a lot to do with it because some blacks and whites didn’t get along during 1819-1902 when the Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes wrote poems. Even though the poem Walt Whitman “I Hear America Singing”and Langston Hughes “Let America Be America Again” have many similarities there are many differences too;one such difference is the impact of their race. Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes didn’t have that many similarities.
When thinking of a historical figure, many imagine a president, king, or general that lead a country to greatness, but never realized some could be the ones who influence the minds of society. Although not thought of as anything, writers and poets hold the key to shaping the society’s mindset without even knowing it. Being a civil rights activist, social activist, and role model for women makes Maya Angelou a historical figure who has made a huge impact in American society and in American history. Born poor and black, she was a childhood victim of rape, shamed into silence. She was a young single mother who had to work at strip clubs for a living.
Maya Angelou was a strong African-American women who made an influential impact on the Civil Rights Movement, in bother her actions, and her literature. Her life experiences and courage helped others, and made her work influential. During Maya’s early life, she experienced many hardships that shaped her into the person many remember her as. Born on April 4, 1928, she only lived in St. Louis, MO for three years before her parents got divorced, and Maya, along with her mother and brother, moved in with her grandparents in Arkansas. At the age of eight, raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Maya learned the power that words possess.
His poem Sympathy is just one example of how he felt trapped like a caged bird in his life. Even though the Civil War was over, African Americans still did not have as many privileges and opportunities as most White people had. Most of Dunbar’s writing showed his perspective of life and the struggles that came with it. Maya Angelou was born in 1928 and suffered a hard childhood that later on affected her writing. When she was eight years old, Maya was sexually abused and raped by her mother’s boyfriend.
For my comparison and contrast paper, I chose two works of poetry from the late Langston Hughes. Hughes, a highly accomplished poet, short-story writer, dramatist, essayist, and editor. Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri and grew up in Lawrence, Kansas. The work of Langston Hughes drew upon spirituals, jazz, blues, and folk expression. Oned biographer, Arnold Rampersad, even went as far as calling Hughes “.. the most representative black American writer”
Sojourner Truth (1797 –1883) born as Isabella Baumfree, belonged to the second generation of slaves Dutch landowner in Ulster County, New York. In 1827 she fled in New York and worked as a maid. She joined the group of evangelicals in New York and became a member of the African Zionist church. In 1843, she took the name Sojourner Truth, and became a traveling preacher.
Angelou’s contribution to the Civil Rights Movement and her achievements as an activist were remarkable. While these achievements seem to be enough to last a lifetime, the Civil Rights Movement was only the beginning for Angelou. Angelou worked as an outspoken Civil Rights activist during the movement. But even after the Civil Rights Movement had ended, she continued to be a voice of humanity, speaking out against anything that harmed the human spirit. Angelou moved on to influence American society as a whole, from the 1970’s to the day she died, May 28, 2014.
The poems in this essay both talk about being a woman. “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou is about more of a confident woman while “Woman” by Nikki Giovanni is about a woman who wants a man to change for her. The poems though very different, are also similar because they both talk about confidence as a woman. By the end of both poems the narrators both know that they are women who are strong and do not need anyone else 's acceptance but their own. They know their own self worth and that is enough for them.
Maya Angelou wrote the poem “Still, I rise.” These two poems both have their own meaning but are still similar in many ways. To begin, Hughes poem was about how African Americans were looked at as differently. The poem was about how blacks were segregated from whites. They were treated different and not looked at as human beings.
