Ill try to compare and contrast the two since the movie does not depict the story exactly as how the novel does. Similarities There were still some similarities in the film that tied back to the book. One of the main ones is when Nick walks to Gatsby’s backyard and finds him standing at the edge of his dock reaching out to what was a green light.
It’s easy to pin point the difference but in reality they share common themes which includes life lessons. Despite the difference in the years and the actors both the classic and sequel has common themes that can be applied to situations now in day. When we compare and contrast
Compare and Contrast Gatsby’s Parties and Funeral In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Gatsby is known for throwing very lavish parties. There are many people there, music, dancing, drinking, and everyone always has a great time. The irony of Gatsby’s funeral is that even though Gatsby is thought to have many friends and an exciting life, he ends up dying alone. The differences between the parties and his funeral are that the parties are extravagant while the funeral is dull and that many people go to his parties but hardly anyone shows up to his funeral; the parties and funeral are alike because Daisy is one of the people who is wanted at both the most, but never shows up. Tom’s and Gatsby’s party differed in almost every aspect possible. While Tom’s party was a small party to assert his dominance to his mistress and friends, Gatsby’s party was to lure and impress the love of his life. Tom’s party displayed his snobby old money ideals by not spending much money and effort, while Gatsby’s party symbolized new money with its excessive and flaunting spending and grandiose show. The level of intimacy at both parties differed significantly. Despite Tom’s party being small, it was far from intimate with all the guests budging into all conversations, Nick couldn’t even have a talk with Catherine long enough without Ms. Mckee budging in.
The 2013 film version was full of flashbacks of the past while Nick Carraway narrated the story of The Great Gatsby to his psychiatrist. The setting in this new movie was somewhat in the period of the 1920’s. However, the music, the behavior, and the costumes made the movie look too modern for the 1920’s. The new movie was somewhat like the book, but there were some events that were skipped or were not included.
Blinded by Memories How protagonists of Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby are similar by rejecting reality and how it leads to their downfall? The Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby share the podium when best portraying the American dream and experience. Despite differing greatly, J.D. Salinger’s Holden Caulfield’s experiences and inner aspirations are akin to those of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jay Gatsby. The Great Gatsby and the American dream and success it illustrates including: wealth, fame, and roaring parties held by Jay Gatsby may initially seem wholly different from The Catcher in the Rye.
Jay Gatsby, the title character of the novel “The Great Gatsby” is a man that can not seem to live without the love of his life. Trying to win Daisy over consumes Gatsby’s life as he tries to become the person he thinks she would approve of. What most readers do not realize is that Jay Gatsby’s character mirrors many personality traits and concerns that the author of novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald, had. In fact, Gatsby and Fitzgerald are similar in that they both had a girl they wanted to win over, took a strong stance on alcohol, and ironically both had similar funerals, also, both people also symbolize the American dream.
Casandra Salazar Ms. Tobias English III GT 12 January 2017 The Great Gatsby After reading and watching The Great Gatsby, I gathered the dissemblance and alikeness in both the book and motion picture. As written in “The Great Gatsby”, the first example of similarity is that the book has the same theme to the “Roaring 20’s”. In the written book, Fitzgerald described the parties as huge and dramatic, where as in the movie, the directors did a fantastic job translating Fitzgerald’s words into a lavish visual spectacle of booze, sequins, and confetti.
The entire plot of the movie “The Great Gatsby,” directed by Baz Luhrmann, is pretty much very accurate to the novel of the same name written by author F. Scott Fitzgerald. They both center around a man named Jay Gatsby who throws extravagant parties in hope that one day his love Daisy will wander in. Of course like all movies that are based off of books they all have their similarities and differences. Whether they be very small or very noticeable, sometimes even changing the entire story completely, they are still there. Sometimes the purpose of this could be that the director wants to add their own little twist to the story or it could be that they are going for a much deeper meaning or symbolism.
Between World War I and the Great Depression, the 1920’s were unique and special years in American history. The best way to represent that time would be by historian Frederick Lewis Allen providing the historical account of America in the 20’s in Only Yesterday and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famed novel, The Great Gatsby. Both of them reflect America in the Twenties by showing lifestyles and behaviors of people who lived in that time. We can follow their beliefs, actions, and morality through the works. While Allen was seeking to capture a decade, F. Scott Fitzgerald did a good job by pointing to the main issues during that time.

Forming part of the Lost Generation, these authors not only develop similar themes throughout their works, but heavily influenced each other. The Great Gatsby being Fitzgerald’s magnum opus, serves as a prime illustration of the staples of contemporary literature. In the novel The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, the author depicts himself through a character, Nick Carraway, conforming to other self depiction common in the Lost Generation, such as Hemingway in the Nick Adams stories. Nick Carraway and Nick Adams represent Fitzgerald and Hemingway, both serving as apertures into Fitzgerald’s and Hemingway’s view of the world.
The Great Gatsby is an iconic piece of American literature encompassing the 1920s era in American history. This story was written in 1923 by F. Scott Fitzgerald and was later adapted into a movie in 1949, 1973, 2000, and then once again in 2013. In the 2000 version of the movie the plot line was very similar to the book with only a few major differences and a few discreet ones as well. The movie however, also followed the book very well and even used direct quotes from the book helping you to understand the point Fitzgerald was trying to make. Markowitz the director made many good decisions in this adaptation as well as a few costly mistakes that made the importance of the book and plot line of Fitzgerald’s book.
The American Dream is the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success, prosperity, and social mobility through hard work, determination, and initiative. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby attempts to achieve social mobility but ultimately fails due to the constructs of old vs new money. An argument is shown that the American Dream is just that, a dream, and that happiness cannot be achieved through wealth. In the novel, the super poor are stuck in their social class, unable to move because they live in the valley of ashes, which represents poverty and the corruption and social decay that came with the lavish and careless lifestyles of the rich.

“The Great Gatsby” and “A Streetcar Named Desire” both focus on the common theme of pursuing goals and living the American Dream. As well as leaving behind the past and “turn a new leaf”. The main characters in each story, Blanche and Gatsby, both have dreams of wealth and great living.
