Similarities Between O Brother Where Art Thou And The Odyssey

In the movie and book there were many similarities and differences. In Odyssey, the main character Odysseus leaves his land and family in order to battle for an ally’s kidnapped wife, the battle of Troy. He spends a decade later trying to return home, battling various ills and evils so that he may eventually be able to return home. In the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou the three main characters Everett, Pete, and Delmar escape from a prison chain gang. Everett convinced his fellow inmates that he has hidden a treasure that must be recovered before his hometown is flooded in the name of progress and the creation of a dam. Both the movie and the book had many conflicts and issues but one important is that both had heroes in the movie the hero was Everett and in The Odyssey the hero is Odyssey. Also in O Brother, Where Art Thou The three main characters travel back home, with many interesting adventures along the way, including meeting a blind man who tells them their future, Everett’s attempts to woo and win over his wife Penny, and becoming a famous singing trio who receive a pardon for their crimes due to their immense popularity. One being Odyssey and his crew meet Polyphemus who is a Cyclops living on an island with his brothers however in the movie Everett and his friends meet Big Dan Teague (Cyclops) he’s a huge guy who can see from one eye. Also in The odyssey, the story takes place centuries ago 1200BC, while the movie took place very recently, during the great depression. These differences bring with them different cultures and values. The book explained the situation in more detail then the movie because it was just able to put a lot of information out unlike the movie which was limited to a certain time and point.
