There have always been similarities in puritans and pilgrims; however there are also many differences .The puritans were more non separating Congregationalist and the pilgrims were separatists. The puritans settled in Salem and Boston and were well educated unlike the pilgrims who were not so educated. The puritans were more middle classed people and the pilgrims were poorer. The pilgrims settled in Plymouth and sailed on the mayflower. There were so few in number of pilgrims compared to the many puritans who came by the thousands. The southern colonies English and settled in Jamestown, whereas the middle colonies were Dutch and settled at the mouth of the Hudson River. The main goals of the middle colonies were to farm in order to make riches. When the English took New Amsterdam from the Dutch they called it New York. The southern colonies goal was very different from those of the middle colonies. Their goal was to find gold in order to obtain wealth and riches as well. In the southern colonies small numbers of people owned very large amounts of land. Tobacco and rice were major cash crops for the southern colonies. Crops were grown on the very large plantations which needed many workers for assistance. The southern colonies also differed from the middle colonies on their views of women. In the southern colonies women were treated as the mistress of their household and also assumed the role of the plantation mistress as well. Whereas in the middle colonies women’s roles were more simple and common. They were expected to clean the house, cook all of the meals within the household and make goods which consisted of candles, butter, clothing and soap. There were very few slaves in the middle colonies whereas the south had more slaves to the need of labor for their field and plantations. These slaves were forced to work, separate the cotton and tobacco and keep the field organized so their masters could make more money. The middle colonies did not find this particular work as useful being more farm land colonies. When observing these colonies it is very obvious that these colonies differ in many ways. It is also obvious of the many ways they were also alike. They both made it a necessity to make product and money for their colonies no matter what type of work or workers they needed to get the work done. The similarities show in the pride the colonies had for themselves and the strive they had in making anything possible for their communities. The middle colonies had a mild climate with warm summers and mild winters. The southern colonies however had such humid summers it gave rise to the spread of disease. The warm climate did however make it possible for the crops to grow throughout the year helping in making product and riches for the south.
