To be blantly honest, Puritans and Pilgrims would greatly disapprove of the american society we live in today. Today, we live in a capitalistic society where we strive to be the best out of everyone around us, which would deem to be selfish to both of the groups.In the states, we strive to become successful, which is calculated by how much wealth we have and belongings. When the Puritans first came to the new world, they made a goal for themselves to live a life through christ and to help each other no matter what. This all included the fact of helping each other out when one was hungry, sick, or even struggling to make ends meet in order to survive. Back then, the way of God was practically in everything, in which the personal narrative of Jonathan Edwards states, “God’s excellency, his wisdom, his purity and love, seemed to appear in everything, in the sun, moon, and stars....etc” ( pg. 173). So, with the lack of religion in most schools, they would most definitely feel as if the education system has failed society as a whole because of the lack of education of the Lord. According to Edward’s sermon, “Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God” god will,”trample them in my fury and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment”( pg. 202).This quote further emphasizes the reason why the Pilgrims and Puritans would feel that way. Back in the Puritans and Pilgrims time, they mainly focused on the aspect of religion. They worried about the state of their souls and the states of others, which is something very unique when compared to the ethnocentric society we live in today. In the present however, we worry about our grades, income, and what’s going on the next day. If the Puritans and Pilgrims were to live the exactly same way in the past but in the present, there would be a problem. The thing is is that no matter where you go in the states, it’s safe to say that it’s basicly the same premise all around. What this means is the fact that we all live under the same rule of law, government, and modern day of living. If the Pilgrims and Puritans were to live in today’s society, they would be considered very weird and too passionate about their religion. Sure, When dealing with Edwards, it is quoted that he, “was trying to restore to his congregation and to his readers that original sense of religious commitments that he felt had been lost since the first days of the puritan exodus,” while trying to convert christians to be moved by the, “ principals of their belief” ( pg. 169). However, The vibes that would be given off would be a rather negative one, since everyone has adopted the principle of modern day living in today’s standards, not of the past.
