Throughout history, the American education system has changed. During the colonial days education was much different, boys and girls received different educations. In the 20th century schools were reforming for the better. Today, school in America is available to everybody and for free. Although experts have been studying the effectiveness of the past education system and the present education system, students are still not ready for the real world.
In the colonial days boys and girls all had different educations. Boys were taught higher math, Greek, Latin, science, ship navigation by the stars, geography, history, fencing, social etiquette, and plantation management. Schools changed from being completely private and only for upper class to available for common people. Reformers during this time sought to increase the opportunity for all children to receive an elementary education. They argued that an education could help prevent crime and poverty. They also sought to establish a free elementary education. The reformers during this time helped to establish a compulsory school attendance for elementary aged children. High schools were developed in the early 1800’s as public schools. They had a focused curriculum with college preparatory classes.
In the 20th century, the idea of an education for everyone was still around. By this time most kindergarteners were in public schools. The rule was if a state had public schools the state controlled free public education. Attendance to school became mandatory and an education was universal. Instead of using paper homework, schools now use computers to assign homework. There are websites where children go to learn about a topic in English, math, science, and social studies. Websites like Assistments, allow teachers to assign homework to students virtually, and students can get instant feedback. At a school like Metro Early College High School, this is very common. Every student at the school has a laptop to use for their classes, and their teachers have their own websites where students can find their homework. Today in schools boys and girls all get the same education. Girls are allowed to go to college and pick the amount of education they want, and they can also choose to go to college. Boys get the same education as girls, they can choose to go to college, and are allowed to select what the study in school. Boys and girls alike can pick what careers they want to have based on the amount of education they have received. Many careers today require at least a high school degree that they receive once they have graduated high
