In the short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, the characters Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones compete in their courtship of Katrina Van Tassel. In The Courtship of Miles Standish by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Miles Standish and his friend John Alden both want to gain the hand of the virtuous Priscilla Mullins. Throughout both works, the characters use their own strategies to achieve their goals. Each of their strategies varies in success and expresses different parts of Romanticism.
Sloths are very strange animals with their sluggish behaviors, yet they are very interesting at the same time. Sloths belong to the mammalian order Xenarthra, which also includes armadillos and anteaters. There are two different kinds of sloths, the two-toed and the three-toed sloth. There are four species of three-toed sloths and two species of two-toed sloths. Two of these species of sloth can be found in the tropical forests of Costa Rica, the brown-throated three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) and Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni).
Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones are two, extremely different characters. Both of the characters’ names represented them well; Ichabod Crane was tall and lanky, while Brom Bones was muscular and strong. Ichabod was an educated being and also apprehensive. Unlike Bones who was arrogant, upfront, and more street-smart than book-smart. A few things that contrasted between the actions of both of them is that Ichabod didn’t know how to ride a horse very well, he taught music, was a school teacher, he helped people all around the town with their farms, and had to work hard for his goals.
In this lab, rats, mice and voles are considered rodents. On the contrary, shrews and moles are considered not rodents. Owls are not like the typical bird species. Barn owls swallow their
The order of primates include a wide and varied array of species, from lemurs to macaques to humans. Grouped by distinctive characterestics, they are also distinguished by clear dissimilarities. Both these aspects may be seen with comparison to chimpanzees and bonobos and to an even more marked degree in regards to nonhuman primates and humans. Each species possess its own specific traits ranging from physical to behavioral to mental that set it apart from its biological kindred while still being firmly linked together. Chimpanzees and bonobos are physically quite similar to one another, with the chimps displaying greater sexual dimorphism, the physical variances between males and females.
CHAPTER SIX: City Rats Unveiling of a rodent Of all the city creatures, the rat is the undisputed king. Due to its extraordinary climbing habits, rats make easy work of trees, power and telephone lines, and even gutter spouts to facilitate its access to homes [Bird]. If you live in the city, there are rats living with you, whether you see them or not. While there are several species, the two most well know in North America are the Roof rat and the Norway rat (also known as subway rat, sewer rat, alley rat, house rat, or common rat).
Mus Musculus belongs to the Mammalian class of vertebrates. A common and advantageous characteristic of the house mouse is its relatively small size. At birth, mice have an average weight of 1 gram. Peak weight ranges from 25-40 grams in adulthood. The reproductive biology of mice is especially conducive for laboratory breeding.
When reading in chapter 9 about “Geology and Primate Origins”, I came to a decision to choose the relative dating techniques. It is dating techniques that establish the age of a fossil only in comparison to other materials found above and below it. Relative dating techniques use the principles of stratigraphy to tell us how old something is in relation to something else without applying an actual chronological age. An example of this technique is biostratigraphy (faunal correlation), biostratigraphy is a relative dating technique using the comparison of fossils from different stratigraphic sequences to estimate which layers are older and which are younger; employed in the Early Pleistocene deposits at Olduvai and other African sites. The prime
The Museum Although the city of Chicago is usually associated with well-known historical events, such as the Chicago Fire for example, this wonderful city can also be attributed with hosting two unique and significant historical events—the World’s Fair of 1893 and the establishment of the original Field Museum in 1921. In addition to being held as an event to celebrate Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the “new world” in 1492, the Chicago World’s Fair—also commonly referred to as the World’s Columbian Exposition—was also an opportunity to celebrate art as a whole and to allow for inventors all around the globe to showcase their new devices and art. However, because the World’s Fair of 1983 was a one-time event and was, essentially,
In The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the school teacher Ichabod Crane and the town hero Brom Bones were both pursuing Katrina Van Tassel, the “daughter and only child of a substantial Dutch farmer” (75). Ichabod was Katrina’s “singing-master” (69) who “made advances in a quiet and gently insinuating manner” (86). Katrina enjoyed Ichabod’s attention and flirted with him, but did not reciprocate Ichabod’s feelings in the end so he left. Conversely, Brom, the “hero of the county round,” (83) assertively showed that he was willing to fight for Katrina’s hand and would have “carried matters to open warfare,” (88) to prove his love, but Ichabod “was too wary to give him opportunity” (88). Still, Katrina seemed to have enjoyed encouraging Ichabod’s rivalry
Sloths usually only go the forest floor to defecate, this makes them very vulnerable but when in the trees their color, slow movement and the algae on them acts as camouflages. A sloth’s fur is specialized to grow in the away from the sloth’ body to protect it from the weather when the the sloth is upside down and some of the sloth’s fur have tiny cracks that can collect water .Sloths are folivores, they mainly eat leaves and plant material , some two toed sloth sometimes will eat insects and other small animals. Since sloths mainly eat leaves, it does not give them enough nutrients they need so they have specialized chambered stomachs to slowly digest their food. Sloths also have very low metabolic rates and they have low body temperatures. Researchers have found out that sloths in the wild actually sleep about 10 hours a day and don’t sleep for fifteen or more hours like captive
I struggle to get on my knees and look around. Apparently I'm not alone. Six ratlike creatures lie around me. if I look further I can see an enourmous tail that leads to an enourmous ratbutt which seems to be stuck between an opening in the wall. Is that?
Compare and contrast essay “Our lack of power and our oppression are one and the same, Inan. Without power, we’re maggots. Without power, the monarchy treats us like scum!” The contrast between the oppression presented in Children of Blood and Bone, and black panther: Wakanda Forever Children of Blood and Bone, Oppression is centered around the lack of power of those oppressed, then the subsequent suppression of their culture, while black panther revolves around a nation desperate to ensure they never end up in that situation. Firstly, will be how the disappearance of magic radically changed the lives of diviners and maji, and how the loss of power, succumbed them to years of oppression.
Deborah Swarthout Modern Man and Neanderthals WCCCD-Fall 2017 Modern Man and Neanderthals: Where did they go? It has long been thought that modern man evolved from the Neanderthals. Although we have many similarities, the most recent studies suggest that modern man actually co-existed alongside the Neanderthals and interbred with them to create the modern man we know today. Neanderthals or Neandertals (Homo Neanderthalensis) are considered to be our closest extinct human relatives.
Mammals and reptiles have been on earth for millions of years. They are both the two largest animals. Both mammals and reptiles can live together in different habitats even though there are several differences between them. A major difference reptiles and mammals have is their reproduction.
