Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and West Side Story directed by Steven Spielberg both have many messages to take away from them. In 1980, a drug called lorcainide, was put into a clinical group to be tested. The drug was produced to regulate abnormal, heart rhythms that were seen as harmful to the person who experienced them. How the clinical worked was half of the patients were given the drug lorcainide while the other half were given a placebo. After testing though, the company stopped production of the drug because of commercial reasons, but still medicines, similar to lorcainide, were still being prescribed. Little did anyone know, for about twenty years, the company who produced the medicine lorcainide, hid information about the clinical trial from the public and other pharmaceutical companies.

It opened the eyes of those who had been blinded by hatred, changing the way they viewed the delicate concept of life and death. The power of their emotions was so strong, that there was no escaping them. In the play, Shakespeare displays the power of emotions by the actions of not only Romeo and Juliet, but their families as well.
In West Side Story two young teens in a more modern world, divided by gang rivalries, fall in love. Although the settings of these tragic love stories are vastly different, the parallel characters and plot elements of both stories help to develop the theme of love. Characters in each story have many similarities and differences. Romeo and Tony’s similarities include being in love with people they cannot be with.
