One of Orwell 's goals in writing Animal Farm was to portray the Russian (or Bolshevik) Revolution of 1917 as one that resulted in a government more oppressive, totalitarian, and deadly than the one it overthrew. Many of the characters and events of Orwell 's novel parallel those of the Russian Revolution: In short, Manor Farm is a model of Russia, and old Major, Snowball, and Napoleon represent the dominant figures of the Russian Revolution. Mr. Jones is modeled on Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), the last Russian emperor. His rule (1894-1917) was marked by his insistence that he was the uncontestable ruler of the nation. During his reign, the Russian people experienced terrible poverty and upheaval, marked by the Bloody Sunday massacre in 1905 when unarmed protesters demanding social reforms were shot down by the army near Nicholas ' palace.

Throughout history, revolutions have been a key part of creating culture; encouraging and inspiring others to act upon unjust ruling or treatment, even if the repercussions are nasty. Fighting for what you believe in doesn’t guarantee a better outcome or even change, but that didn’t stop the change hungry people of Haiti or Iran. The Russian revolution started in 1917 during World War One. The people of Russia had many hardships economically, emotionally, and physically. The war had killed more people from their nation than any other before that time, they had to work long physical hours during the day, and the economy was suffering due to the war. Just as the people of Russia were suffering, the animals on Mr. Jones farm, in Animal Farm were suffering too. Their lives were “miserable, laborious, and short.

Revolutions: when they come to mind we think of these potent moments when changes are being made, where people stand together for a better life. But, in reality, revolutions always end exactly where they began or “have begun”. The Bolshevik Revolution is one of those situations. The Russian revolution started because while Nicholas II, the king, was ruling, there were chronic food shortages, and everyone lived in poverty. A man named Vladimir Lenin successfully over through Nicolas but, like most revolutions, he turned out to be just as bad as Nicholas II, and he developed the Communist party ( History, 2011).

In the novel, Napoleon became the leader after the demise of Old Major and the expulsion of Snowball from the farm. In the same way, Joseph Stalin became the leader after the decease of Vladimir Lenin and the exile of Leon Trotsky. The similarity between these incidents shows how precisely the book has been written down. George Orwell accurately portrays the character of Joseph Stalin through Napoleon in his allegorical novella, Animal Farm since both leaders were shrewd, selfish and always placed their personal gain before their people.
