In the novel That was Then This is Now by S.E. Hinton, Bryon and Mark are best friends, so much so that they live together. As they are getting older they are starting slip away from each other. Even though they are trying to stay together, one decision that Byron makes drifts them away forever. The point is that they have some similarities and differences. Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget. One similarity that Mark and Bryon share is helping the household with money. Mark and Bryon will do anything for money even if it puts them in harm. For example, Bryon and Mark hustle pool money at Charlie’s bar even though they are under aged and it is against the rules. The only way to get into to the bar is by Charlie, since they are both good friends with him. Mark nor Bryon seem to disagree with the idea or held against it before doing it. Another example is that Mark sells drugs to get money for the poor household. Mark could get arrested for this. Both Bryon and Mark visit Bryon’s mom in the hospital to check up on her, and they would definitely do anything for her. One thing Mark loves Bryon’s mom is that she is the one who took him to live with Bryon instead of hom going up for adoption. Bryon loves mom because normally you just are attached to your mom, and if he wasn’t we can visibly see that in the book. Another thing they love about her is that she is not over protective.
