Have you ever watched a film or heard a story that was so eye opening and insightful that it changed your perspective on the world? Narratives, whether in literature, film or media, are able to construct realities and ideas that can resonate with the audience, something that you can relate to or even oppose against. Even in TikTok, you can see those Reddit stories and think “That doesn’t sound so nice anymore” or “I agree that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza!” All that comes from narratives and stories that others tell which are powerful enough to allow us to have varying opinions and perspectives on a single topic. what does a classic novel and a kids' film have in common?! Well, there's actually so much in common between these two pieces of literature. I'll first talk about the most obvious one, the American dream. The theme of the American dream is prominent in both stories. It's all about money and success, even if you lie about it. It's probably obvious in The Great Gatsby that Jay Gatsby lies about his wealth and social status to impress Daisy, but this is actually seen in The Princess and the Frog when Prince Naveen lies about his riches and money to convince Tiana, who he thought was a princess, to kiss him and turn him back human. They both lie about being wealthy and whilst Naveen technically is a prince, he says that his parents had cut his allowance off and he “had no riches and was completely broke”, and in the same text, Tiana also comes from a lower income family just like Gatsby. Jay Gatsby embodies the American dream of self-made success, which is also a key theme in The Princess and the Frog, where Tiana is working 2 shifts, 2 jobs a day to afford the restaurant her father and she had always dreamed of. In both texts, the characters’ work hard and try to pursue their dreams of being able to get something, and I'm sure everyone has something they ultimately want or are hoping to achieve.
