The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer is an intriguing novel with many similarities and differences to my self selected novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. The novels are science fiction; which means it's a genre of novels that use science and technology with a futuristic time period often . Both novels are aimed at teens and people who enjoy science fiction. There are many comparing and contrasting details in the setting, characters and the overall plot.

The setting of both novels takes place in a futuristic time period. I know this because in The House of the Scorpion, they are cloning humans; which has not been successfully completed yet. The Giver occurs in a future time period too, because they can control what the character's see and the weather, what the know and other things like that. The setting of The Giver is a utopian community where everything is “perfect”. The setting of The House of the Scorpion is a country called “Opium” which is in between what is currently the United States and Mexico.

In The House of the Scorpion, it goes through Matt's life as a clone and the secrets of the people in the house. In The Giver, Jonah is assigned as the receiver of memory. The receiver of memory gets to know about how life was many years before the leaders controlled what people knew and created “sameness”. Jonah beings to question society for multiple reasons. He starts to understand that the leaders are wrong and people should be able to think what they want and he comes to wonder about the restrictions on everything by the leaders, also known as the elders. He also grows to love a baby, Gabe who his father takes home from the place where all the new children stay until they mature.
