Scott F. Fitzgerald The Great Gatbsy Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby are two very different characters that share the same similarities. While Gatsby is beyond rich with an interesting yet mysterious past. Tom is also a rich man and powerful man from a rich family. Their love over the same woman, Daisy will lead to differences and similarities. Gatsby and Tom inherited their money in very different ways. For example Tom is a rich man from old money and a very rich family, while Gatsby’s money is self made through bootlegging and illegal activities. Tom’s wealth is what helps him maintain his power and social class, “one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven”. This shows Tom’s level of power and popularity. (p.7) In addition While Tom uses his money to maintain power, Gatsby spends his money trying to receive Daisy’s attention and love. In chapter 7 Gatsby starts showing his new shirts to Daisy that were silk and high quality. Daisy reacts to these shirts by saying “They're such beautiful shirts”. Tom controls Daisy and views her as part of his property. For example Tom also likes the image of being with Daisy and not actually her. Tom cheats on Daisy with his mistress myrtle. Tom has an apartment in town to take his mistress. Gatsby is more romantic and truly loves Daisy. Gatsby thinks Him and Daisy are meant to be married and live with each other for the rest of their lives. Gatsby is loyal to Daisy and believes they can find a way past anything.In addition Gatsby and Tom both share the willingness to compete over daisy.
