Edgar Allen Poe is one of the greatest writer to ever walk the Earth. He wrote many stories but in particular horror. Among those horror stories are the “Masque of the Red Death” and the “Black Cat”. Both are guesome and involve brutal death. In the stories the “Red Death” and the “Black Cat” the author uses word choice, in the “Red Death” the author uses syntax as well and in the “Black Cat” Poe uses vivid imagery. The imagery however is used better than the syntax. The author's craft word choice is shared in both the “Red Death” and the “Black Cat”. In the “Red Death” is is used on page 262, paragraph 1, line 1, “No pestilence had ever been so fatal or be hideous.” The words are used to show how gruesome and fatal the disease is without using bland words. In the “Black Cat” the word is “hitherto,” on page 159. This word was chose to advance the setting and plot without using regular transitions. In both stories the word choice has a reason for being wrote and does something for the story whether it is to drive home a point or drive the setting and plot. For the “Red Death” it is syntax used and the “Black Cat’s” is vivid imagery. Syntax is used in the “Red Death” when the author wrote, “There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution.” (page 262, paragraph 1, line 2). In this case the syntax is used to further the medieval time period. The “Black Cat” uses vivid imagery on page 159, “The cat followed me down the steep stairs, and, nearly throwing me headlong, exasperated me to madness.” The quote lets us see into the speakers head using the vivid imagery of the cat tripping the speaker.
