Poe uses Gothic diction to explain the dire significance of the red death, while also creating an ominous mood. Early in the story the speaker introduces the devastation that the Red Death causes. The speaker describes the effects as “So fatal.” (1.1) The word fatal is often used when regarding something that causes death.
In The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, the author uses allegory, metaphorical speech, and chronological order to create the desired feeling in the text. For instance, the seven rooms in the story represented a certain time in a person’s life. The first blue room represented the beginning, while “the seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the ceiling and down the walls… upon a carpet of the same material and hue. But in this chamber only, the color of the windows… were scarlet --a deep blood color,” and represented the end, or death (paragraph 4, Poe).
An example of this imagery the Poe uses is the ebony clock chiming and making the people in the entertainment room go silent in fear. “…. while the chimes of the clock yet rung, it observed that the giddiest grew pale, and more aged and sedate passed their hands
In “The Masque of the Red Death,” Poe describes the nasty symptoms of Ebola. Poe says, “There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men.” The description of the pain and fatality of this disease makes the reader wince by just imagining the agony of the afflicted. Moreover, Poe pens the violent acts people inflict on each other.

Poe’s use of imagery contributes to the dark and mysterious mood of the short story, “The Masque of the Red Death.” In the first paragraph, a sense of darkness is conveyed in the sentence, “There was no light of any kind emanating from lamp or candle within the suite of chambers.”
The Raven crafts the idea of suspense by using a range of different types of literary features. The use of hyperboles creates more suspense because the more exaggeration used grips the reader in more. Describing the Raven as “Ghastly, Grim and ancient” (8) makes the idea that the author is trying to get through, more coherent as Poe is offering more description. The way Poe repeats his “Sorrow for the lost Lenore” (2) helps embed the idea that he misses Lenore but it also makes the reader wonder where she went, why she left and why she is so important, which creates suspense. The way Poe uses repetition and pathos when he is trying to get an idea through is very prominent.
Poe wrote in the “Masque of the Red Death,” “The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men,” (Poe 1). Poe shows how people are vulnerable to death, even after taking every possible precaution. Poe writes, “The mask ... was made so nearly to resemble the countenance of a stiffened corpse ... gone so far as to assume the type of the Red Death. His vesture was dabbled in blood - and his broad brow, with all the features of the face, was besprinkled with the scarlet horror” (6).

It has destroyed the country, with the narrator describe the process of the Red Death, emphasizing blood red. The disease is so deadly rapid that one is dead within thirty minutes after he is infected. In beginning of the story, Edgar wrote all these words to create a horror of death caused by the "Red Death."
In Poe’s stories, the main characters experience fear, but they all handle it distinctively. Poe uses irony, symbolism, and imagery to show how fear affects the narrator’s mindset, along with their future. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Masque of Red Death”, the main characters try to isolate themselves from evil, but Poe uses irony to show that death is inevitable.
“Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe is full of literary elements such as antagonist, climax, imagery, personification, and symbolism. Throughout the plenary story these elements are present. The antagonist, or ‘villain’, of “Masque of the Red Death” is the Red Death. It is the antagonist because it causes all of the tribulation in the story.
After the fearful description of the population's doom, Poe introduces the world of Prince Prospero. The atmosphere is different but still frightening. There's no blood or disease in his apartments, but the Prince is stated to be "eccentric" and "bizarre," and the rooms of his home are irregularly disposed of, which puts forth the idea of Prince Prospero's apartment being similar to a maze. The Gothic-style windows are tall and narrow, the hallway is closed, and each one of the chambers is painted in a different color, as if to make up for the dullness of the external world, producing an oppressive ambiance. The most striking room is the seventh and final one, entirely decorated in black except for the window panes which are covered in scarlet.
Death can never be escaped no matter what. In “The Masque of the Red Death” Edgar Allan Poe shows the theme of death, a suspenseful mood, and an ominous tone. Through Poe’s use of literary devices, the reader can discover tone, theme, and mood. Throughout Poe’s life he experienced death with two of his mother’s and his young wife. Death is shown how inevitable it is with Poe’s writing and experiences combined together.
Despite the belief that one can live forever, death is certain. Edgar Allen Poe wrote his short story, “The Masque of the Red Death” with a greater meaning than simply the Red Death, or plague. He wrote this story, symbolizing the stages of life. In “The Masque of the Red Death”, Poe uses the symbols of the hallway, the rooms, and the braziers, to enhance the allegory, and to show how death is inevitable and one can not spend their life worrying about it.
