Bruce Dawe became a teacher after he returned from serving in the RAAF. He was inspired to write poetry by his mother who read Scottish poems to him from a young age. Bruce Dawe illustrates that ordinary things in life are a good subject to write about as he often wrote freeform poems about ordinary subjects that ordinary people were able to relate to. Poems such as “Doctor to Patient”, “The Cornflake” and “Homo Suburbiensis” are good examples of Bruce Dawe’s illustration of events or things ordinary people will experience in the form of poetry. “Doctor to Patient” addresses a very ordinary event that every Australian must’ve faced at one point in their lives.
Poetry is an effective means used to convey a variety of emotions, from grief, to love, to empathy. This form of text relies heavily on imagery and comparison to inflict the reader with the associated feelings. As such, is displayed within Stephen Dunn 's, aptly named poem, Empathy. Quite ironically, Dunn implores strong diction to string along his cohesive plot of a man seeing the world in an emphatic light. The text starts off by establishing the military background of the main protagonist, as he awaits a call from his lover in a hotel room.
A common theme between all the poems is sadness whether it be because of what has happened throughout their lives or what is happening now in their lives. In the seafarer he is very discontent about how his life has been. He has spent almost all his life out on the sea, because that all he wants to do is travel. He never understood why he just always had the need to travel.
He is able to refocus during these times of frustration, and he continues to care for his father until he passes
She finally calms down one Jim reassures her that everything is okay. To put this into perspective, imagine someone has information that cannot be shared. He is constantly asked by his friend to tell him what the information is. He keeps refusing, saying that the information will not go over well with him. Anne Carson’s “Nighthawks” and Rupi Kaur’s “you were so distant…” deal with hurt, heartbreak, and the ending of a relationship. Both poems provide contrasting views of rejection; however, they do so through vastly different deliveries. “you were so distant…”, due to both its specific ambiguous approach to visual poetry and interpretation of rejection, does a better job of inciting self-reflection in the reader than “Nighthawks”. Both poems describe a narrator lamenting the change or end of a relationship. The narrators seem to be struggling with grief, hurt, and desperation.

“The moon rose over the bay. I had a lot of feelings.” - A poem by Donika Kelly With a purpose and message being the goal for their work, poets are often found using many specific qualities in their writing. Her inner self craves for freedom to drive past and achieve something. She envisions her song as a luxurious Cadillac, where she now wants a materialistic world. She is in her imaginary world until the heat of the urn in her hand bring back her to reality, where she starts comparing to her real life, hallow and vapid. She attempts to find comfort in her room, as she says “coffee cruises my mind visiting the most remote way stations, I think of my room as a calm arrival each book and lamp in its place.” She starts to reflect her possessions and the security they give her and what they represent in her life.
Feelings of sorrow and yearning are expressed in the song “Black” by Pearl Jam as the singer describes his heartbreak and remorse over a breakup with his girlfriend. Examples of psychological agony the singer endured are expressed throughout the song, for example when the singer states: “…my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds.” In these lyrics, we see that the singer’s hands are “bitter” and “chafe”. To chafe is to rub raw and the idea of hands being rubbed raw so as though to see the bare skin that lies underneath inflicts ideas of agonizing pain. The word “bitter” means to be brutish or coarse.
The melancholic tone leads to sympathy as we can see the narrator having feelings towards her captors and the sadness of the situation and her sympathy is shown through the tone in this
