In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible written by Arthur Miller and in M. Night Shyamalan's film, The Village both contain examples of jealousy transforming a character demeanor. In The Crucible, Abigail desires John Proctor so profoundly that she wants his wife dead and she attempted by convicting her of witchcraft. Abigail affirms that her name is “white” in the town; however, she initiated the Salem Witch Trials as a result of her longing for Proctor. An illustration of this concept is when Abigail complains to Proctor that, “She blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her!”(Miller 23-24). In other words, she is envious of Elizabeth and is bluffing that his wife is ruining
