The book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee involves the adventures of Scout and Jem and the plenty of lessons they learned throughout. In the beginning of the story, Scout, just a mere 6 years old, was getting ready for her first day of school. On the first day she had such a wide variety of knowledge that she frazzled the teacher. Despite their knowledge, throughout the story Scout and Jem learn a heap of lessons that the world can also apply to their own lives. While there are countless differences between the time period of To Kill A Mockingbird and today, there are also numerous similarities. Without family, without a support system, who would people go to in times of need? Sadly some people do not have the blessing of a natural support system, and are left to fend for themselves. However, it is often best for them to deal with the cards that they have been dealt with. Scout and Jem were handed some undeniably exceptional cards, and some cards that just downright tired them. Atticus, however, was one of those exceptional ones. ""Aunty," Jem spoke up, "Atticus says you can choose your friends but you sho' can't choose your family, an' they're still kin to you no matter whether you acknowledge 'em or not, and it makes you look right silly when you don't."” (Lee 300). This quote by Jem features the importance of family in To Kill A Mockingbird. Throughout the story, Atticus was constantly there for Jem and Scout. He showed them what a great role model should look like, and he indicated the importance of always looking at a situation from the point of view of the other person. All of this still proves relevant today as well. Several people in the world today have experienced issues with their own families, which allows the world to realize the importance of it even more. Everyone has experienced a rift with their family. During those rifts, people realize how much they miss having that closeness with their family, and sharing every moment.
