In Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Burris Ewell and Walter Cunningham are both poor, but they are very different in several ways. They are like two sides of the same coin, and Scout learns a lot about the poor through them. First, Burris Ewell and Walter Cunningham's appearances contrast greatly. Walter tries tries to look presentable, while Burris does not.
In the beginning Walter is basically perceived as a jerk-he doesn’t seem to get along with anyone, not even his own family. His character likes to turn discussions into fights, make rude comments to his wife, and act all around immature. A part that accurately shows the way Walter conducts himself is when he is arguing with Ruth and says “Man say: I got to change my life , I'm choking to death, baby! And his woman say- Your eggs is getting cold!”
He also demonstrates that he drinks too much and puts his drinking in front of his family, a bad habit that would be made worse if he owned a liquor store and had liquor more readily available. In act 2, scene 3, Walter faces the barrier of his money being stolen by Willy Harris (128). Immediately following the theft, Walter is crushed and wants to take the money the citizens of Clybourne Park raised to keep the Younger’s out of their neighborhood and use it to replace the lost insurance money (3.1 141,142). Finally, when faced with Linder, Walter has an epiphany and his dream changes to match that of his family. He realizes that
He ends the passage with the remark “THAT MONEY IS MADE OUT OF MY FATHER’S FLESH!” (128). This reveals to the readers why this money meant so much to him, why it was his motivation. For Walter, his father had to die for him to get the insurance money, so he views this has his father's flesh. As a result, Walter wanted to make good use of that money to not ruin his father’s legacy.

Also In the movie adaptation Walter has a job at the life office and loses a negative photo. This gives Walter another goal and this goal changes him more throughout the story. The negative makes him more courageous and risky. The Walter in the story is dry and boring. Lastly the movie gives Walter a reason to daydream.
Key details in the film illustrate how the rest of the world see Walter. He is a shy dull man that is boring and maybe some might say a loner. When you watch the movie beginning to end you see his identity transform from timid to brave and courageous. He steps out of his shell and does thing he thought he would never do. Walter Mitty found his identity.
In real life, Walter is an old man who is sent on errand trips while his wife gets her hair done. In his daydreams, however, Walter is a doctor, a war pilot, a sharp-shooter, and a captain. Walter’s habit of daydreaming interferes with his real life. At the beginning of the story, on page 328, Walter’s wife has to warn him to slow down while driving because he is to immersed in his current dream. On page 330, Walter found him.
Walter’s statement tries to tell the women that he didn’t try to make the world the way it is now. Yes, he wants luxurious items for him and his wife. However, even though he seriously messed up, he’s still the man in the family and will continue to make the decisions for the
Walter goes into immediate denial, making excuses for where Willy, their second business partner, could be with the money. He continues on until he realizes “THAT MONEY IS MADE OUT OF MY [HIS] FATHER’S FLESH-” (128) and he had lost it all; he felt he lost his chance of pursuing a better life now that he had even lost his father’s support. His false pride is severely injured up until he is struck with an idea which he believes could save the family. He abruptly calls Mr.Lindner, who he had originally turned away, and tells him to come by because he wants to take his offer of being paid to not move into the new house.
(114-115) By giving up the money, Walter is shown to be spontaneous and quick to trust. He made a quick decision about giving Willy the money, without even thinking about the consequences, which shows his spontaneity and trust issues. He also didn’t even think to put any money away for Beneatha and he just trusted Willy to get the license before actually getting to know him. The play A Raisin in the Sun, shows how Walter settles on a brisk choice to give his Mamas insurance money to the character Willy Harris so he could purchase an alcohol store. Thus, his choice accounts Willy Harris to steal the cash which causes an apathetic temperament in the story and makes lost expectation in the family.
On page sixty Walter was walking down the street when he noticed a cab, and decided to ride on the back bumper. As Walter was trying to get off of the bumper, but his shirt has caught in the trunk. When the drivers stopped the car at a stop sign, Walter had broses from the waist down, and finally decided to go home. When Walter interred his house, he decides not to tell his parents about his injuries. Later that evening Walters father noticed that Walter wasn’t looking good, so Walter’s father told him to take of his close.
It won’t let him get a good job or house, be able to have a car, or allow him to live the way he wants to live. Because of all these stressors, it forces Walter to make a risky business decision that costs him most of his father’s life insurance money. Racism caused Walter to risk every dollar he owned and he lost it all. Later, he almost lost his own dignity by pleading with Mr. Lindner for his money back, but Mama saved him from doing it. Walter and the Youngers decided to move to Clybourne Park to live Walter’s dream of trying to live with the same privileges of white people.
Walter further shows his false pride when he flaunts his newfound sense of power when Mr.Lindner, one of the Younger’s soon-to-be neighbors, offers him an unjust deal. Now that Walter has control over the family 's money, he considers himself the head of the family and decision maker; this plays an important role towards how Walter treats others now that he holds himself to a higher standard. This theme applies to Walter when the chairman of the “welcoming committee” (115) named Mr.Lindner pays a visit to the family a couple weeks before they 're supposed to move into their new home in Clybourne Park. During this visit, Mr.Lindner makes the offer of the Clybourne Park community “buy[ing] the house from [them] at a financial gain to [the] family” (118). Mr.Lindner’s offer represents the racial oppression and how the white community looks down upon and doesn’t want African american people dirtying their communities.
