Sin is an evil that happens in every society but that doesn’t stop most from harshly judging other sinners. A sin is an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law. Sinning endangers the ideal relationship between an individual and God. “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts the life of one sinner who’s consequence is quite unusual, an embroidered scarlet “A”. This makes sure no one ever forgets what sin Hester committed. God’s law was considered to be the community’s law. The Salem witch trials were held in 1692, in colonial Massachusetts, to bring whomever was responsible to justice for the crime of witchcraft. The famous Salem witchcraft trials began when three townspeople were named as witches. The first woman to confess was physically abused to get the confession. You can infer that many others were abused in Salem's hunt for witches. The only way to escape the imminent death of being hung was to confess to being bewitched. Those who confessed were forced to as a “part of repentance help convict others.” (Witchcraft in Salem). While this saved them now there were other consequences they faced. “One, their reputations were damaged; two, their confessions were lies and they believed lying was a sin; and three, a confession freed the accused but left them at risk of future accusations of witchcraft.” So while confessing looked like the best way out of being hung it lead to a miserable life for you and your family afterwards. During the trial, 20 people and 2 dogs were executed. “One person was pressed to death under a pile of stones for refusing to testify.” (Witchcraft in Salem), this shows that the Puritans were very serious about punishing the accused even if they were not guilty.
