Nigerian author: Chimamanda Adichie talked about the concept of a “single story.” This single story is concerned about people viewing a certain ethnicity, culture, or country through the view of a single perspective and only that perspective. She stated that single stories are developed by: “Show a people as one thing and as only one thing over and over again and that is what they become.”
She focused on the preconceived view of Africa, her home country, through the views of the Americans. The Americans view Africa as a country filled with poverty, suffering, and uneducated people. She talked about her experience where she had a friend that was surprised to hear that she spoke exquisite English and was surprised that the songs they listened to are not “tribal music” but rather songs played in the first World Countries- Mariah Carrey.
She claims that the development of a single story is a very dangerous concept because it affects how we view and treat people of certain ethnicities, or people from certain countries of origins before we even meet them. Because of this, we end up grouping people in their …show more content…

Being with my partner, we encouraged each other’s strengths and covered each other’s weaknesses. I realized that the best type of relationship is one that divides the power equally between the two partners, and all decisions should be made together. I was in a predicament, I had two stories that were conflicting with each other, and I had to choose one- or so I thought. I also realized that my family had a single story about me as well. I was expected to be better than my partner and be the provider and the “man” of the family. Unfortunately, because I was with my parents more than I was with my partner, I ended up choosing their story to follow and not my new story.
