When choosing a sketch to analyze, the image that demonstrated the message of “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” in a sophisticated and elegant way was chosen. The sketch being analyzed is fairly simple, but effectively illustrates the message of Edward’s sermon clearly. The text and colors in this sketch are mainly used to appeal to both ethos and pathos. At first glance, a couple of things can be inferred from the sketch. The potential audience that the sketch is drawn towards the people in the community who have not converted because they think that their good deeds are enough for God to spare them. When analyzing the sketch, the audience is able to infer that the world is full of darkness and that God is the light. Both the text and the contrast in colors aids in portraying the underlying tone of the sermon. Although the sketch only contains a few colors, the simplicity helps intrigue the audience by appealing to pathos. Immediately after looking at the sketch, the use of the color red and orange in the floods supports the text of “the fiery floods” written on the illustration. The text of “the fiery floods of the fierceness and the wrath of God” relates directly to the illustration and helps the audience clearly understand why the flood is colored like a fire instead of water. Because the color white is typically associated with things that are pure, the color choice establishes ethos in that the hand symbolizes God determining the fate of the sinner. In drawing the sinner in black and on his knees the image evokes the emotion of suspense because the sinner is unaware of his fate and has to depend on the mercy of God.
