I initially expected the story of movie of Sinuhe to only have minor differences similar to how the Harry Potter movies adapted the books. However, the movie is very different from the original story and pretty much the only plot point that is preserved is Sinuhe leaving Egypt. However, the reason for him leaving and his return are not even the same between the two sources. The biggest change is in the very tone of the movie. The story is more of a redemption story while the movie revolves a lot around romance. In the movie, Sinuhe falls in love with a tavern girl and a exotic escort, both of which are never mentioned in the story. In the story, Sinuhe is an attendant and dear friend of the pharaoh. However, in the movie, Sinuhe starts off as a lowly physician and slowly makes his way into the palace as the royal physician. Movie Sinuhe is more of an underdog than his story counterpart. He is bullied and teased by his best friend, taken advantage of by women and other characters, and is not much of a warrior. Sinuhe is the story is almost always held in high regard immediately wherever he goes and is even strong enough to kill another warrior in combat. The most pivotal plot point in both sources is Sinuhe leaving Egypt. In the story, he leaves due to the death of the Pharaoh, but in the movie, it is a much longer chain of events. He gives up all of his possessions to Nefer, then he leaves the palace which indirectly causes the Pharaoh’s daughter to die. The Pharaoh then sentences Sinuhe to death, so he leaves with his servant to foreign lands. While the story covers the foreign lands indepth and takes up a large part of Sinuhe’s life, it is covered in just a quick cut in the movie. Instead of being treated nicely by foreigners and visiting far away tribes, Sinuhe is instead forced to beg and steal to survive outside of Egypt. The only
