I have recently read the novel The List by Siobhan Vivian. I found this novel very interesting and important to read as it relates to my situation in college. The book The List is based in a school called Mount Washington High, where every year a list is posted around the school of the prettiest and ugliest girls in each year.
As you read about the list and how it effects the students on the first day back of school, the introductions in the first few pages helps you sense the excitement and dread when it comes to the reputation you may gain when on this list. In the first chapter this dialogue is used to show a conversation between the main characters, Danielle, Lauren, Candace, Bridget, Sarah and Margo and Jennifer. “You’re the prettiest freshman girl at Mount Washington High!” This quote shows how Mount Washington high’s whole college experience is based on the labels ‘Prettiest’ and ‘Ugliest’. This started off the book with a very shallow and judging atmosphere, which sadly got my attention. I personally thought having a busy and intriguing introduction got the readers attention quickly. Personally I get really bored quite quickly when starting books but this novel managed to keep my attention. It also sets the scene for how the book is going to carry on.

I was teased for being ‘Ano’ that stood for Anorexic, as I am naturally skinny. For me this was really hard for me as my self confidence decreased as well as the way I saw myself. So reading this book allowed me to connect to what the main characters were facing and how they reacted. Also seeing the way the main characters over came the judging comments and bullying really interested me, as I am apart of a local charity that coaches young teenage girls through the same
