It required that a man to be Honest, Loyal, True and Brave of Heart, and Honourable to both King and woman. Humiliation is also a key part of the Code of Conduct. Without it, a man would not be able to suppress his dignity and pride. Therefore, when Sir Gawain pledged his loyalty to King Arthur, he showed humiliation when he failed to achieve the task of killing the Green Knight.
