Ever since the creation of slave narratives, one can notice that despite the different account, gender and experience a slave recounted in his or her story, there always have been recurrent topics resulting from slavery in general. The most frequent subjects are the question of identity, the process of dehumanization and violence. However, those three subjects happen to bring another matter related to slavery, religion, which is not only present in slave narrative but in any format recounting slavery in the United States. As a result, this research paper will present, analyze and connect four different documents related to religion in the context of slavery.
The first document is an excerpt from the historical drama film The Birth of a Nation released in 2016 and directed by Nate Parker. The motion picture, based on actual facts, narrates the life of the slave Nate Turner in the 19th century United States. The film depicts the evolution of Nat Turner, from his childhood when he received a religious education from the wife of his master to his execution on account of his role of leader in the slave rebellion which take place in Virginia in 1831. The story is also set in the 19th century United States and tells the story of Uncle Tom who is a Christian believer despite his condition of slave. As a result, his belief makes him a faithful slave unlikely to flee or to demonstrate resistance, comforted in the idea that God watches over him. The excerpt featuring in this research paper takes place in Chapter 38 when Tom eventually questions his faith in God.
