Abraham Lincoln once said, “Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves.” During this time when Lincoln was president the Civil War was occurring. He is saying that the people in the United States who believe in slavery and no freedom for African Americans; shouldn’t be free. This is a wonderful quote by Lincoln, showing that slavery is wrong and everyone should have freedom. Slavery was an important time during the making of America. It shaped and showed new ways of living whether they were right or wrong. But one thing for sure, slavery impacted the U.S. It impacted our nation by the slaveholders wealth, causing the Civil War, and having Lincoln as the president, who later wrote the Emancipation Proclamation.

One of the reasons why the South was so reluctant on giving up slavery was that many southerners had plantations which had slaves that picked the cotton. Most northern states already put an end to slavery around the 19th century. For the South it is a completely different situation, they want slavery so the slaves can pick their cotton. The U.S. is dividing into two and they went to war, known as the Civil War (Wallenfeldt 120). This means that the North had different opinions on to whether or not to have slavery. The war started in 1861 and ended in 1865. After all of those years into battle, the North one and slavery is abolished by the 13th Amendment. It wasn’t just the North’s and South’s decision it was also President Lincoln’s who wanted slavery to end because he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation although it didn’t free many slaves or abolish slavery it led to the end of slavery (American Civil War
