Society has not always been equal and people were not always treated the same. People see others as different just by their skin color and not on their life values. Slaves were taking away from their families and treated like scum. Society thought it was fair to let whites have control over the slaves. But what people do not know is that slaves did other things besides pick cotton and cook for their owners, they lost loved ones because they were separated or even killed do to the fail of labor. The institution of slavery, which encouraged the ownership and bondage of one human to another, remains a dark mark on this nation's history and resulted in a myraid of problems. The days other meals were usually prepared in a central cookhouse by an elderly man. Weekly, food rations--usually corn meal, lard, some meat, molasses, peas, greens, and flour—were distributed every Saturday. Vegetable patches or gardens, if permitted by the owner, supplied fresh produce to add to the rations. Morning meals were prepared and consumed at daybreak in the slaves cabins("Slavery and the making of America"). Most slaves lived on large farms or small plantations; many masters owned less than 50 slaves. A strict hierarchy among slaves from privileged house slaves and skilled artisans down to lowly field hands helped keep them divided and less likely to organize against their master. House slaves, for example sometimes came to identify with their masters interest over those fellows slaves("Slavery and the making of America"). Many masters took sexual liberties with slave women, and rewarded obedient slave behavior with favors, while rebellious slaves were brutally punished("Slavery in America").
