Slavery, the “peculiar institution” of the United States, has been a heated subject for many years. Even though slavery remained in some parts of the world, opposition to it grew. The leading argument was that slavery was immoral and that it violated the constitution. Three main reasons for opposition to slavery were social issues, the press, and political views.
The chapter covers various cases in which there were lies that were being told by the white women regarding them being raped by the Afro-Americans. The chapter covers the how the white women who had black children were treated in the society, and this is regarding being considered as outcasts, and they were divorced, disgraced, and in other cases, they were cashed from their homes. The third chapter of the book is “the new cry.” This chapter covers the plea of sympathy that was done by the southerners towards the northerners and this is because the whites who had sympathy for the lunching were deemed to have no sympathy for the white women who were victims of rape from the Afro-Americans.
The oration “The Atlanta Compromise” from Booker T. Washington was to have the White citizens realize that Blacks are no different from Whites, other than the skin color. Blacks perform as much strenuous activities as Whites do, maybe even more, but why do the Whites get so bothered with Blacks being equal? Whites were sufficed with slaves being and treated lower than them. Also, some did not allow Blacks to be equal to them as well as not cater them, even though slavery has ended, to proclaim their partiality.
After the plantation revolution in the 1600s, slavery became a horrible institution driven by the mass production of goods by white slave-owners who were looking to succeed economically. Slaves were treated as disposable commodities and lived hard lives under the brutal hand of their slave-owners. By the 1800s, slavery was natural and very common in the south, and was justified because African Americans were seen as an inferior race who were uneducated and incapable of engaging in society. Different geographies call for different types of work ranging from labor-intensive sugar cultivation and production in the tropics to household help in less agriculturally intensive areas. In addition to time and space, the mindsets and beliefs of the people in those areas affect how the slaves will be treated and how “human” those slaves will be perceived to be. The realty was that political rights wouldn’t put an end to the poverty and mistreatment of African Americans. Ms. Moody believed that the non-violent demonstrations rallies weren’t really that effective to the degree that was needed. They weren’t being respected as people of color regardless if they were being humble. African Americans couldn’t eat at white restaurants or use the bathroom and drink form the same bathroom as whites.
For example, Moody and the SNCC tried to get more African Americans to register to vote by visiting their churches, but then more African Americans stop going to church to the point the ministers don’t want the SNCC to come back. They did not want to register to vote as it would harm their livelihood (Moody, 275-276). This conveys how most African Americans were complacent in their current situation as they were living fine even with the racial discrimination and segregation. They did not want to risk what they were able to get in life in spite of the whites suppressing them. Another example is Adline, Moody’s sister, sent a letter to Moody, telling her about how her actions being in the civil rights movement caused the family trouble as her brother, Junior, almost got lynched, her uncle, Buck, got beaten up, and her mom was in fear of being attacked during the night (Moody, 299).
The story takes place at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in America, when desegregation is finally achieved. Flannery O’Connor’s use of setting augments the mood and deepens the context of the story. However, O’Connor’s method is subtle, often relying on connotation and implication to drive her point across. The story achieves its depressing mood mostly through the use of light and darkness in the setting.
The 19th century was a century full of hatred, cruelty, and especially inconsiderate feelings among the Black lives who inhabited the American country. Slavery was the head of everyone’s thoughts that was the driving force for most political controversies during the 19th century. Slavery is an over complicated, and long-lasting predicament. Arguments that can so long live forever debating whether the right decisions were properly made for the benefit of a few individuals. Blood was spilled during the road of discussion, and feared spread to slaves who vision themselves outside the picture of slavery.

They greatly influenced the lives throughout the thirteen colonies. People failed to realize they were humans just like them.
The blacks did not receive the same luxuries as the whites did. For instance, the colored received less than stellar entertainment where as the whites were able to get anything they wanted, “There, instead of houses and trees, there were fishing wharves, boat docks, nightclubs, and restaurants for whites. There were one or two nightclubs for colored, but they were not very good” (Gaines 25). It was unjust to the blacks that they could not enjoy themselves as much as the whites because of their skin color.
The white people viewed slaves as sub-human, and a black woman who was mentally superior was not something they would have encountered before. Dana explains what Margaret, Tom’s wife, may have been feeling; “I don’t think Margaret likes educated slaves any better than her husband does…. He can barely read and write. And she’s not much better” (Butler 82).
