Chapter 3, The “Giddy Multitude”: The Hidden Origins of Slavery, in the book A Different Mirror focused the development of slavery in the Americas. Throughout the chapter, Takaki makes many references to Shakespeare’s, “The Tempest”, and relates much of what happened in this time period to the play. Takaki starts outs explaining the arrival colonists coming over as indentured servants. Although they were white, indentured servants were being outcasted by the wealthy white men. Their intentions of finding wealth and land were soon confuted by the discrimination they received.
However, the issue that is still a major struggle today is what Fitzhugh calls “the White Slave Trade” (164). By this, he means the capitalist way of using hard labor to earn profit. Instead of calling these people laborers or working men, he refers to them as “slaves to capital” (166). The mark of this is still seen in sweatshops and lower paying jobs. The use of slaves has always been present in the world since the beginning of civilization, although the use and treatment of those slaves has differed widely through time and geographic location. Different geographies call for different types of work ranging from labor-intensive sugar cultivation and production in the tropics to household help in less agriculturally intensive areas. In addition to time and space, the mindsets and beliefs of the people in those areas affect how the slaves will be treated and how “human” those slaves will be perceived to be. The prisoners were abducted from their homes or surrounding areas and used in the triangle trades as slaves. The conditions were horrendous. They were bound with ropes and chains and forced to walk long distances, sometimes thousands of miles, to the slave ships. Often they had to carry heavy items as they walked. Men often had thick iron bands around their throats.
Europeans in the times of the slave trade from time to time vindicated enslavement of Africans by indicating that slavery by that time occurred on that continent. African communities established many forms of slavery and confinement that mixed from a kind of labor position to something that is more like slavery in which human beings are measured as things. During the seventeenth century, the system of slavery was very popular around the world. Hispaniola, which is Haiti today, was the first colony in the Caribbean to rebel against the system of slavery to form an independent nation. Hispaniola was a much flourished colony. Many countries at that time like, France and Spain, were very interested to maintain the status quo. This practice was very detrimental to the people.
Blues could not exist if the African captives had not become American slaves. Without African slaves from West Africa, there would be no blues music. The immediate predecessors of blues were the Afro-American/American Negro work songs, which had their musical origins in West Africa. It is impossible to say how old the blues are but it is certainly no older than the presence of Negros in the United States. The African slaves brought their music with them to the New World.
Goree island was a holding place for slaves before they were actually sold into slavery. Beautiful scenery , people still live on the island. For 400 years the Africans on the island fought for freedom from the white colonists, such as the french and portuguese. Goree is small 900 meters but great history. A person living on his or her own cannot survive on minimum wage job either. Their living expense would just be exorbitant. The earnings of minimum wage workers are crucial to their families salubrity. Evidence from 2013 and 2014 minimum wage increase shows that an average minimum wage worker brings home more than a moiety of his or her family 's weekly earnings.
Slavery was different for America then it was for the rest of the world. For the rest of the world, it wasn’t a race thing they just enslaved the people that they had conquered. They did not care what the color of their skin was it was just about the need for labor. In the article “New of New World Slavery” it explains how slavery was different in America than in Europe. “Slavery in the classical and the early medieval worlds was not based on racial distinctions”.

It was practiced in most of the world, from prehistoric times to the modern era. Despite this commonality, slave systems have varied considerably. Societies have experienced different degrees of it, with different practices and different outlooks, even though the basic characteristic was the same.
The causes and effects of slavery during the Atlantic World, were mixed depending on if you were European or African and Native American. There are many reasons as to why the slave trade was started. One main reason as to why it started is that the Portuguese were trading in Africa. Back in Europe, Europeans had slaves to do their work for them. Some of them moved to the Americas and missed having slaves to do their work for them so, Europe sent merchants to trade the Portuguese manufactured goods for slaves.
