Since, money was a very prominent aspect of slave owners, this correlated to their actions. Slave owners did not care about the labor of the slaves as long at it got them profit. Similarly, they exuded harsh punishments to slaves if they weren’t meeting their expectations. In spite of of the innovations created in the 19th century, slave owners unquestionably did anything to maximize their profits, even if it was at their slaves’ expense. Just because the death percentage decreased doesn’t mean that they were receiving milder treatment. Innovations such as the steam powered mills and railroads only helped to lessen the labor and loads but did not change the treatment of slaves which is a big difference Mazano wrote (pg 51)- “4 blacks …show more content…

They describe their life as gruesome in reference to their punishments and abuse they endured. Many slaves received harsh punishments when it was assumed that they weren’t working to their pull potential. One slaves recounts his punishment of thrown in a stable all night and having to stand up all night until the morning as punishment. He then explains how the punishment continued the next morning even after being pusnished through the night. Many of them got beaten and one recounted a slaved about to be “boiled to death”, and some even wore masks, chains and shackles for punishment. In the “Autrobiography of a Slave” by Juan Francisco Manzano, he showed how drastically the treatment of slaves really was. He writes about ____ being dragges from a horse and attacked by dogs. Sir Richard Button describes in his _____ “___”, slaves being in better living conditions by being “dressed”. This made me question their views on slaves because slaves being dressed should not something that is receiving praise or something that is even considered a privilege. Slave owners main goal was profit an revenue. This led to a lack of care in how they treated the slaves, regardless of the innovations created in the 19th century.
