In the book, Leaders of the Lost Cause, the authors Gallagher and Glatthaar took into account that these people at that time did not feel that what they were doing at the time was wrong. During this period of time it was simply the way life for persons to own slaves and it was considered acceptable. This book is what gives us the background knowledge needed to really understand the content we receive in the course. One of the ways it aligns with the content is that education on slavery in the south side is always given but we tend to forget that slavery existed in the north as well. We hear about southern plantation owners, southern slavery and everything happening there but we do not often hear about the slavery that existed in the north. This is also the time in which the “seasoning” period was seen. The “seasoning” period was seen as a time in which the slaves who were seen as “the best” were sent off to the Caribbean where here they were traded with sugar, and tobacco.
These were not jobs that a paycheck was earned from or that one could call in sick to, this was forced labor in which some were beat into submission. The provisions for the slaves were different depending on who owned you, where you worked and what tasks were performed. Some slave had just the bare necessities, living in cramped quarters, with barely enough food to sustain life and work, with little hope for change. How do we know these things today seeing we have never been slave owners and there is no written instructional manual to teach an individual? We have the written and recorded accounts from former slaves, independent stories, exaggerated, some maybe slightly, but there is plenty of proof to these facts also.

The issue of slavery was a significant “thorn in the side” of America from the very inception of our nation. Despite the fact that slavery was an accepted legal phenomenon in the eighteenth century, it also invoked significant controversy. Many Americans, typically those denizens of the southern states, felt that slavery was an indispensable economic necessity. In 1860, there were several million slaves in America. Most of them were African American. They were exploited labor through working about twelve to sixteen hours a day with low wages, even women and children were also exploited labor with lower wages than a normal slaves. The slaves were enslaved in plantation, factories, in the fields, farm, and others. With a strict management regime of the white slaveholders, the slaves had to live with shortages in all aspects such as food, clothing, housing, and illiteracy.

One way for the abolitionists to prove slavery should be officially banned. To begin with, William Lloyd Garrison. Garrison favored full political rights for the slaves (pg 423). Alexander Hamilton and Benjamin Franklin also opposed slavery (pg 422). Indentured Servants and slaves are two unrelated kinds of workers because of the reasons they are working and how long they work.
