Sasha’s Description Paragraphs: Sleeping Venus (1510): In the painting entitled “Sleeping Venus”, by Giorgione, there is a nude woman reclining in the countryside with her right hand behind her head, and her left hand on her groin. She covers the whole width of the painting. She has amber-colored hair that is parted in the middle and braided around the sides. The woman is resting atop a red and gold gown, which her cream-colored skin contrasts with. Below the gown she is resting on are some flowers and some green grass. Around her are rolling hills and green trees, and a village on the far right that was manmade. Beyond the village is a tall building with high arches. Also by the village are barns with hay bales. Giorgione showed this by placing a nude Venus in an organic environment. The placement of Venus’s hand on her groin and other hand behind her neck imply the recollection of love, but not love itself. Interestingly, Giorgione placed most manmade things in the middleground or background of the painting. He may want the viewer to believe that nature is, in fact, much more important than any manmade object will ever be. In my view, this is somewhat of a social statement because in this time period it was impolite and improper to bare any skin, let alone be nude. This also ties into the fact that bodies are natural things, and we should not be afraid of them. This painting was practically all occupied organic space, except for manmade buildings that are actually colored light brown to blend in. The mood of this painting is serene and natural, because of the calm expression on Venus’s face and all the nature around her. The focal point of this picture, Venus’s face and upper body capture the viewer to really examine the painting and think about what it is trying to convey to
