The Ocean County College Repertory Theater Company performed the play, Smokey Joe’s Cafe at the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts, located on the Ocean County College campus. Smokey Joe’s Cafe was a very engaging play from the talent of the actors, musical ability of the musicians, and the overall joyful atmosphere. The environment of this play was quite perfect; there were comfortable seats and I have a great view of the stage. It was a pleasant, inside venue at room temperature, not too hot or not too cold. All of individuals in the audience of theater were respectful while the play was occurring and very supportive to the performers and musicians, as I also was. The theater itself was very welcoming and casual, as well as all of …show more content…
This is a smooth jazz song performed and sang in Act 1. The song started with all five men singing in the tenor and bass key. Then when the instrumental part came, all six girls came on stage and danced through it. The timbre featured all of the orchestra, being the piano, bass, drums, reeds, and guitar. “On Broadway” has both a monophonic and homophonic texture, as well as a dynamic marking of mezzo forte. The tempo is moderato, there is a very upbeat rhythm, and the meter is quadruple. Additionally, it is in the key of F major. The overall pitch of the song is low, with a conjunct melody, and a harmony consisting of consonant chords. “On Broadway” has both a monophonic and homophonic texture, as well as a dynamic marking of mezzo forte. There is a large amount of repetition in the sense that the lyrics, “on broadway”, are sang a various amount of times. The song came to an end with the entire cast dancing on stage. I not only enjoyed the song, “On Broadway” due to all of the musical features it was composed of, I also enjoyed it for various other reasons; it was the first costume change of the play, where the men changed from casual outfits to snazzy suits. Also, I am familiar with this song; therefore, I was able to sing along to it in my head, which was …show more content…
The musical theater background shined through each and every one of the eleven cast members with their singing, acting, and even dancing. They were always on top of the beat of what the orchestra was playing, whether it was dancing or singing. I was able to easily understand the song lyrics through their body movements, actions with one another, and the way they portrayed their dancing. The orchestra was also something that was put together very nicely; they all cohesively played every song together, never missing a beat. The music within this show was for the most part upbeat and joyful, which made the audience get into it more. Personally, for me I would rather have upbeat songs to dance to in my seat to, rather than slow and maybe even boring songs to put me to sleep. Furthermore, a couple of setbacks were brought to my attention throughout this show that the performers had no control over; there were very little costume changes, which I did not prefer and there were various times where the microphones clashed with one another, causing vocal intrusions. Going back to the cast of Smokey Joe’s Cafe itself, an enormous amount of eye contact and facial expressions were given to the audience, as well as many forms of communication. First, the cast started off Act II in the aisles of the audience and I found that to be a great way to open up the
