In the story “Snows of Kilimanjaro”, the main character Harry is angry. For example, the texts says, ““Don’t be silly. I’m dying now. Ask those bastards.” He looked over to where the huge, filthy birds sat… ” They are around every camp. You never notice them. You can’t die if you don’t give up.” “Where did you read that? You’re such a bloody fool.”…” (Hemingway 2206). Harry believes he is going to die soon. He has given up all hope of living through his gangrene and simply wants to drink. In the text, it says, “...“Maybe the Truck will come.” “I don’t give a damn about the truck.” “I do.” “You give a damn about so many things I don’t.” … “Bring whiskey-soda.” “Yes Bwana.” “You shouldn’t,” she said. “That’s what I mean by giving up. She has no respect for anyone, which is why she deserved to be cheated on. Overall, Dexter and Judy’s relationship was unhealthy and disgusting. For example, in the text, “She had treated him with treated him with interest, with encouragement, with malice, with indifference, with contempt…She had insulted him and she had ridden over him and she had played his interest in her against his work – for fun…” (Fitzgerald 2158). This just shows how much Judy would toy with Dexter just because she was bored. Their relationship was definitely unhealthy. Both “Snows of Kilimanjaro” and “Winter Dreams” deal with the issue of people with wealth trying to find happiness. In both stories, the people who are working for their money struggle to find happiness within themselves. In “Good Country People”, Joy feels the need to change her name because she likes how ugly it sounds. She also feels like it is an accomplishment she did all by herself. In the text it says, “She had arrived at it first purely on its ugly sound…she saw it as the name of her highest creative act.”(O’ Connor 2526 – 2527). The Bible sales representative in the story was creepy.
