Social and Economic Class Throughout the novel, social and economic class plays a major role in determining one’s position in society. It is a division of a society that brings conflict, also affects the behavior and actions of each character. In the novel, Heathcliff is an orphan with no title, no lands and is shamed for being in the lower class. Heathcliff is brutalized and mistreated by those who are wealthy, such as Catherine, the lintons and Hindley. But as time goes, he seeks his revenge for those who have betrayed him. In the novel, Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte, portrays Heathcliff’s misdeeds and actions as a reflection to the social and economic society.

Catherine Earnshaw, a woman who is in a wealthy family falls for Heathcliff, who is an orphan and has no wealth. Cathy’s and Heathcliff’s love is true and pure, but Catherine seeks another, not for love, but for money. Edgar Linton, a man with a title and land, asks Catherine to marry him. Catherine is shattered, as she is torn between Edgar and Heathcliff. Catherine made a choice of marrying Edgar instead of heathcliff,"I've no more business to marry Edgar Linton than I have to be in heaven; and if the wicked man in there had not brought Heathcliff so low, I shouldn't have thought of it. It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now"(Chapter 9). Heathcliff hears the news and is upset for Catherine has betrayed him. Catherine admits that she is afraid of losing her place of being a lady if she marries heathcliff, for he has no title. It would also degrade her name if she marries Heathcliff. She has chosen Edgar for wealth and she’ll be proud to call him her husband. This makes Heathcliff run away for three years, but he comes back. Now he is new and improve his manner and Physique, to take his revenge towards Catherine and Edgar. After three years, Heathcliff has return to wuthering heights with money and a new manner. Heathcliff blames Edgar for taking his love away from him because he had no title. But now Heathcliff does have money. Heathcliff takes revenge on the Lintons by seducing Isabella, but Isabella falls in love with Heathcliff. Catherine knows what Heathcliff is doing and warns Isabella, “Tell her what Heathcliff is: an unreclaimed creature, without refinement, without cultivation; an arid wilderness of furze and whin stone."( Chapter 10) But this does not stop Isabella’s desire to fall in love with Heathcliff. This causes Edgar to be upset for he is scared, “Leaving aside the degradation of an alliance with a nameless man, and the possible fact that his property, in default of heirs male, might pass into such a one's power”(Chapter 10). After the marriage of Isabella and Heathcliff, Heathcliff mistreats Isabella and has no “pity for her.”(Chapter 10) Isabella is scared that she has made a mistake in marrying Heathcliff for he did not love her.
