This was a very interesting program that included programs to benefit children who don’t know how to cook, or don’t know how to grow their own food. There were also programs in place that helped inmates develop skills for when they are released. The inmates were taught basic life skills, financial literacy, personal finance skills, taught how to balance a checkbook, and taught where to look/go for resources within the community upon release. These are programs that relate to social and economic justice. The programs are in place for the community to use freely.
The Social Learning Theory states that people learn from people around them, so if Ronnie is hanging out with drug dealers, and people who steal, he is going to learn the social behaviors involving committing crimes without any empathy for his victims. He was not alone when he decided to break into the elderly couple’s home and kidnap Joseph and Martha, so in this case, he was influenced by his peers, as well as his individual traits such as anger, and irritability to commit such a crime. Along with the Social Learning theory, the control theory could be applied to Ronnie’s specific case as well. With Ronnie growing up the way he did, he did not view his life as having something to lose, or any stake in conformity. When going to the school it made me realize how much help just one person in a class can be. Just by helping one student sound out words can already better their vocabulary and reading. By giving a little time out of the day to volunteer at this academy you can change a student’s life. What I man by changing their life is by just helping the student become a better student to help them move on to the next grade because they get help back by their disabilities. Being positive with the students at Hope Academy will help them realize how important it is to learn and become a better student and help them understand that they can do anything they out their mind too.
