The American dream is a dream of a land in which one can prosper with ambition and hard work. This idea has created many illusions for some because in reality the American dream is proven to be something that is rarely achieved. No individual is guaranteed success or destined for failure, but it is apparent that women, people of color, and those born into poverty will face greater obstacles than others, despite being a greater part of the American population. An author that tackles the issue of class in the United States is Gregory Mantsios. In his essay, “Class in America-2009”, Mantsios aims to prove that class affects people’s lives in drastic ways.
In James W. Loewen’s “The Land of Opportunity,” he states that social class affects the way children are raised. He discusses the inequality in today’s society and how the textbooks in high school do not give any social class information. The students in today’s time are not taught everything they should be taught. He states that your family’s wealth is what makes up your future. Loewen discusses that people with more money can study for the SATs more productively and get a better score than someone who has less money.
In today’s world, people perceive education by their social class and wealth. Social class is family income, location and lifestyle. One’s demographics can influence their educational and knowledge experience. Education is an important aspect of intellectualism and achieving greater success. After reviewing these pieces of literature, “The Sanctuary of School” by Lynda Barry and “Why Colleges Shower Their Students With A’s” by Brent Staples, it is clear to see that education, while being important to many people, differs in value when it comes to social status.
“How to kill a mockingbird” by Harper E. Lee is centered in a small southern town in Alabama, titled Maycomb County in the 1930. Throughout TKAM; Lee makes plenty of references to southern artifacts and symbols, that lets the readers comprehend many of the realistic historical events that went on in the south. Her descriptive writing take the reader to a place that is very familiar to some, and distant to others. From towns based around churches to racism and family; TKAM’s familiar southern traditions become a prominent them. Some of the many southern artifacts that are used is the cultures continuous hatred towards black folks.
Everyone deserves the same rights. No person should be treated differently . It doesn’t matter how much a person goes to church, or if they know their commandments. It should be based upon what they are accused of and not who they are as a person. In Salem both sides are put to test.
To me, a social injustice is an act in which an individual or group of individuals are not treated fairly based on his or her gender, sexuality, citizenship status, and/or ethnicity. social injustices arise when individuals, who should be considered as equals, are treated unequally. This is caused by barriers, such as racism, oppression, discrimination, and sexism. Social injustices will not be fixed until the individuals who do not respect others start realizing that it is not our differences that should be held against us, but embraced and glorified. Everyone is different, not one person is the same as the next.
Past research indicates that there has been racial and income inequality in Los Angeles for decades. More specifically, there has been racial and income disparities in quality of life and access to resources. Blacks and Latinos have a lower quality of life and access to fewer resources than Whites. The income level of Blacks and Latinos is also lower than that of Whites. The purpose of this research was to investigate how race and income impact such factors as quality of life, access to resources, education, and personal beliefs.
Inequality is often associated with racial injustice, but actually goes beyond that and has created new ways for social inequality to exist among various circumstances in our country. It affects millions in terms of their way/ quality of life. The most important of the vast privileges today’s generation of America has in my opinion are freedom and choice.
