Economic and Social Factors
There can be several reasons why children and young people who come from a more deprived area can struggle to interact and communicate socially. Firstly these areas probably have a lot less of the facilities which are available to children in more affluent areas, such as mother and toddler groups, musical and sports clubs. These provide a safe nurturing space for children to meet and interact in the vital early years. Even something as basic as a children’s playground may not be available in some places and even if it does exist it may not be a safe area for children and parents to use. Your local education authority should have a department which can help with resources such as bi-lingual books etc. Also different cultures may have different traditions and practices which should always be respected and a good teacher or TA will always try to educate themselves on the cultures of their pupils.
External Factors Adults
All of the above external factors also affect forming relationships with adults and in addition adults generally do not have the openness which children have. They tend to be less trusting and may not take things at face value, looking instead for hidden meanings or agendas in conversations.
As a professional in a school environment you must always be especially careful to treat everyone equally and not allow your own preconceived ideas to influence your reactions to people. You need to be respectful of every race, gender, culture etc.
Internal Factors
Internal factors are largely similar in children, young people and adults. There are many conditions and illnesses which can be a barrier to effective communication;
