Social Facts “Social facts consist of manners of acting, thinking and feeling external to the individual, which are invested with coercive power by virtue of which they can exercise control over him.” (Durkheim, 1895, pp.51) In Panama, there have been inequalities in health care delivery due the crisis in systems and many social facts. The three main social facts that are going to be addressed are the difference in social class, gender and ethnicity. Ethnicity result from inter-ethnic relations,whenever two different groups or societies come into contact and establish various modes of territory, political-economical, cultural and social relations. Conflict theory grew out of the Industrial Revolution, thanks to Karl Marx (1818–1883) and his collaborator, Friedrich Engels (1820–1895). They criticized the conditions that were responsible for the mass violence and the capitalist society. According to them, revolutionary violence was needed to eliminate capitalism; and the poverty and misery were its inevitable results (Marx, 1906; Marx & Engels, 1962). According to Marx and Engels (1962), every society is divided into two classes based on the ownership of the means of production. In a capitalist society, the bourgeoisie were the ones who owned the means of production; while, the proletariat did not own the means of production and instead were oppressed and exploited by the bourgeoisie. This difference creates an automatic conflict of interests between the two groups. Simply put, the bourgeoisie is interested in maintaining its position at the top of society, while the proletariat’s interest lies in rising up from the bottom and overthrowing the bourgeoisie to create an egalitarian society (University of Minnesota. …show more content…

Additionally, inequality contributing to social problems is based on social facts such as social class, race and ethnicity, gender, or some other dimension of society’s hierarchy. Because any of these inequalities represents a fundamental flaw in society, conflict theory assumes that social revolution is needed to address society’s many social problems (University of Minnesota. n.d.). The theoretical element that will be used to examine the different social facts is the competition and struggles, which talks about how the different groups (sex, race, age, etc.) compete to be able to reach to a higher position or towards an egalitarian society. It analyzes how the inequality creates a conflict and drives the ones of a lower status to compete for something
